missfire? engine warning light.

Hi all.

I have an import wagon auto on a 97.

Today when pulling into a garage, the engine nearly stalled (I thought a bit strange).
I fueled up and pulled out. After a coulpe of corners i opened it up and the engine cut out, sort of missfireing/rev limiter feeling.
I stopped and re-started, and the engine light was still on. I accelerated up again and the same. After a few minutes i noticed it happened every time and in all the gears at 4,500 reves on the mark.

Any thoughts or ideas would be very welcome as im new to the scooby club.

Also, will it need putting on a computer to take away the engine fault light to clear when its sorted.

Cheers

Terry

Sounds like it could be a Mass Airflow Meter, you can check and clear the fault codes yourself so long as it is the factory ecu which is fitted, google search reading subaru fault codes and you will find a guide on what to do to read the codes and a list of what they mean, basically there is a pair of black single pin connectors under the dash on the drivers side, stick them together and turn the ignition on (dash lights on, engine not running), you will see the check engine light flash, steady even flash = no faults stored, a slow flash = x10 and fast = x10. So 2 slow and 3 fast would be 23 etc. There may be more than one code, they repeat over and over with a pause between codes, take a pen and paper with you, just keep watching till you are sure you have got them all, when done switch off ignition then disconnect black connectors.

you guy's are so good on this site compaired to others ive looked at.

Cheers Iain,

I thought the MAM would generally reduce power at all levels on accelertion and not at the same rev point.

Would re-setting the fault code be enough. If i can work out from the detailed info you gave me. try it and if it clears then buy a MAF.

Best bet is to have a look at reading the fault codes mate, the maf was just a guess from your symptoms but it could be other things and these would also just be guesses.

33 = speed sensor.

Could it be because i unpluged the speedo to unlimit the topend of 114 mph.

If so, why didnt it do it before i went into the garage when i was giving it a bit?

Cheers.

Ecu needs to see the speed sensor, its probably gone into limp mode, reconnect the sensor and it should be fine.

Cheers Iain

Thanks again Iain,

This information is so helpfull and as others have mentioned saves money going to a garage for a 2 minute job.

I have the speed convertion thing to to put on once i get some dials.

Cheers.

Terry
