WRX REBUILD

Ok some doing a lil rebuild on my engine and i wondered if any of you guys knew from experiance what the standard ring size for the import 95 wrx i know they are 92mm but when it came to ordering the guy said they come in theses sizes Subaru 2.0 Bore 92.00 mm 1.20 mm -1.20 mm - 2.50 mm
Subaru 2.0 Bore 92.00 mm 1.20 mm -1.50 mm - 3.00 mm
Subaru 2.0 Bore 92.00 mm 1.50 mm -1.50 mm - 3.00 mm
just wondered if anyone knew what they might be as i really wanted to order them before pulling the lump out,

Also another questions is bearings i wanna get the acl set but they talk about centre thrust and rear thrust sets and again im not sure which set to go efore opening her all up .
All Advice much appreciated.

eclipse performance 21 May 2012 07:58 PM

Hi mate. Your standard bore is 92mm so if it doesn't require a rebore go for that! And you need centre thrust bearings for your car.

If you need really good prices on any bits you need send me a PM and I'll see what I can do!

Donsjapwrx 21 May 2012 09:01 PM

Ok cool but what size are they in 92mm,

Bore 92.00 mm 1.20 mm -1.20 mm - 2.50 mm
Bore 92.00 mm 1.20 mm -1.50 mm - 3.00 mm
Bore 92.00 mm 1.50 mm -1.50 mm - 3.00 mm
They seem to do 3 different sizes in 92mm,
how much can u get a set of std rings for?

eclipse performance 21 May 2012 09:05 PM

Ah, sorry. Using my iPhone and didn't notice the other sizes. They are the piston ring sizes. You will need to pull your pistons out to be 100% sure!

The price on rings depends on the size. They range from £85 - £150!

Donsjapwrx 23 May 2012 10:53 AM

Ok so here is my list so far for mini rebuild :
Threebond tb1215
impreza acl main bearings centre thrust.
Water pump
Thermostat
fuel filter / oil filter
spark plugs (PFR7B)
3" honer
gasket set (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...#ht_3447wt_905)
Not sure if this is any good or not have a look pls and advise
piston ring set 92mm
oils/fluids

Can u guys think of anything else ill need ?

eclipse performance 24 May 2012 12:19 PM

Hi mate. Here are some prices for you, including vat & delivery.
Threebond £24.00
ACL Bearings £80
Waterpump and gasket £69
Thermostat £32
Oil Filter and Sump Plug Gasket £15
Fuel Filter £10
PFR7B NGK Plugs £48.00
92mm Stnd Piston Rings £150.00

As for gaskets, there are a few options. It depends if you want to do full rebuild properly of not?!

Donsjapwrx 24 May 2012 12:27 PM

:thumb:well i want to do it properly so im after a full gasket set, the one i found on ebay seems to be a full gasket set, or am i wrong, also it looks to come with head bolts too, or is this not really what im after, ?
basically i wanna rebuild the engine with new bearings and new rings, so all gaskets to do that, as im not looking to the engine at big power i dont think i need to go down cometic headgaskets and the like just standard ones or slightly better, what would you advices and what sort of gasket set should i be looking for, there great prices too :thumb:

Jimbob 24 May 2012 12:38 PM

Personally I`d uprate the oil pump, as they have been the demise of a few engines.
Also been told to renew the oil squirters or even block them off completely (if you have them), as again they can fail and lead to a bottom end going.

Also my advise would be to fit the best parts as you can, as ou say now you want it standard, but the early classics will EASILY go to 300bhp +. So this would give you the legs to go that far if you wish, whilst also being a bit heavy duty for normal use.

eclipse performance 24 May 2012 02:27 PM

I looked at that gasket set and to be honest I wouldn't go anywhere near copy gaskets or seals. You will regret it once you start getting oil leaks from all over!

Agree on the uprated oil pump, they are an extra £50 but worth every penny.

Properly cleaning the oil squirters is a must, as are a lot of other things. Rebuilding a Subaru engine may not seem particularly difficult if you have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge, but building a GOOD Subaru engine is a different story.

We do a full genuine Subaru engine rebuild gasket set for £549 inv vat & delivery. It includes....

Front Crank Oil Seal *
Rear Crank Oil Seal
Orange Block O-Ring Seal
Engine Block Oil Seal x4
Oil Sump Pan O-Ring
Oil Pump O-Ring
Water Pump Gasket

Head Build Kit
Head Gaskets x2
Rocker Chest Gasket x2
Rocker Chest Bolt Gasket x6
Rocker Chest Plug Gasket x4
Cam Shaft Oil Seal x4
Inlet manifold gasket x2
Water Transfer O-Ring x2
Exhaust Manifold Gasket x2
Up Pipe gasket
Turbo Down Pipe Gasket

If you would prefer we can supply Cosworth Stopper head gaskets instead of the Subaru multilayer gaskets at no extra charge!

And it begins

Well it starts the rebuild of my wrx to find out why i can turn the engine over by hand :) seems very low on compression, so its time to pull apart and find out why. BTW it still goes like the clappers so not sure wtf is going on!

This was my first couple of hours achievement after work last night

got a fullday to spend on it to today and this is what i found.

Donsjapwrx 14 June 2012 08:13 PM

So after pulling the engine out and stripping it down this is what i found.

Now it appears some one has been running this car for a long time with no antifreeze the amount of corrosion on the water jacket side of the liner and blocks are pretty dam corroded at some point there is less then 50% of the thickness left.

Now wtf do i do !!!! looks like i need a new block or see if some one can possibly weld this one back up not sure what to do as i need car on road asap ive onlt got till end of next week to get it back running !!

Anyone got a block !!!!!

Donsjapwrx 14 June 2012 08:15 PM

apart from that everything else is sweet as a nut ! crank is good piston are spot on same as rods, even the bores had perfect cross hatchings all the way through cant fault anything else apart from the corrosion!

Jimbob 14 June 2012 08:16 PM

Cos its so short notice, I`d look for a complete drop in engine or long block.

Donsjapwrx 14 June 2012 08:18 PM

oo the only bad thing is that the bolts that held the two case halves together are f*cked well the ones that were in the water jacket were had to use bolt extractors to get them out as the heads were too corroded .. does anyone know where i can get these from ???

Cheers Guys!!!!

Donsjapwrx 14 June 2012 08:19 PM

either that or a bare block :)) i have every thing else i have a full rebuild kit here rings gaskets bearings got a good crank pistons , i just really need a block and some new bolts to hold the halves together

Jimbob 14 June 2012 08:44 PM

If you have the cash http://www.rogerclarkmotorsport.co.u...productID=2606

You can get pretty much anything on here, but does need searching for and then the lottery to buy them all lol.

Donsjapwrx 14 June 2012 09:14 PM

Update !!

Ok So a little update !

Took blocks down to my local machine shop and they said yeah no problem but will be expensive. which is what i thought just locking at it it is a hella of a lot to weld and then skim back.

So 2nd plan ive sourced another block, v4 block its only slightly knocking but i dont car cos i got all fresh internals to put in, put im getting full short block cranks \pistons inc , not bad for £120 delivered will be here monday!! :norty:

So back to machine shop gave them my crank and heads and also my new valve stem seals and they gonna give the crank a quick polish, skim my heads and also put my new vale stem seals in and lap the valves in for me. Also will be ready monday !

So today was spent cleaning a lot of parts and degreasing and painting.
So far cam covers are now nice clean been gone over with wire wheel and repainted in a nice silver engine enamel .

Got to clean up subframe looks very nice and shiny now ! started to clean up arches and under battery.

Really wanted to attack driveshafts and rear hubs tommorow but they have not turned up yet :facepalm2: been waiting a while for them . hopefully soon tho.

But ill put my nice shiny new cdf racing droplinks on tommoro and clean some more.

Its surprising how shiny you can make the manifold with just a wire wheel on a drill :thumb:

Pics will come tomorrow when i have more of a collection of shiny bits to show off

Donsjapwrx 15 June 2012 09:13 PM

also a bonus a mate who was gonna do a rebuild a year or so ago had a set of new case bolts he said i can have them :thumb:

Donsjapwrx 16 June 2012 06:51 PM

Ok SO got new block today and stripped it down pistons are good and so are the rods crank has spit a bearing but other than that the block is shaweet , fairly clean also anyhow, cleaned all the internals of the block, put my new acl race bearing ins oiled and them put my graphogen grease on also to protect, put the crank back in the rods back in with new acl bearings also put all new block seals on and also used threebond sealant for the block and but the halves back together, rebolted. Picked up my heads from machine shop looking awesome, been skimmed degreased and had new valve seals put in and reground in.

Still waiting on piston rings so time to paint

Painted all the block up and also painted the heads today also.

Waiting on rings to finish.

this time Correctly!

Donsjapwrx 07 July 2012 08:10 PM

Ok Little update.

So after rebuild upon first start all was ok untill you revved it the tiniest bit then you could hear a knock from No.1 piston.

Back out she came.

After much checking, re-checking and checking some more i spotted some thing on the head ......

A stamped letter R and B hmmm ok so now checked piston protrusion to block all protded about 015 thou, check the head gasket hmm 020 thou clearly not enough thickness or tolerances , so the head gasket i was supplied with was 0.5mm (020Thou) thus this allowed for the piston to just tap the head.

After much arguing with supplier he supplied me a new headgasket this time 1.4 mm (055thou) thus now giving me enough clearance. so while i was arguing with suppliers and getting new gaskets i also ordered some new goodies.

Ive now got some new injectors 440s and phase 2 rails
A simtec ecu with launch ctrl and anti lag
Walbro 255 pump
FMIC
New adjustable FPR with gauge
An6 fittings all round and elbows for all corners
AN6 fuel rails ends inc fpr convertor
Stainless steel braided hose.
Now gone parralel fuel setup also.

so now with all that to go on as well i have been busy !

So Its all rebuilt now and ready to fire up tommorow when i have some new anti freeze and see how she goes. !!

FMIC not fitted yet but will be, took the car out for a lil 50 mile drive put some fresh v power in, car felt lovely the handleing is really nice and positive with the new cdf droplinks and the engine omg its so nice now smooth free and boy is there now a nice load of power under the loud pedal!

Im so happy and thankful that through all my hard work work what i have now achieved and got im really happy. !

still plenty more to go, need to keep my eyes out for a ncie clean shell now ;)

Jimbob 07 July 2012 08:18 PM

Hope your running it in and not on boost??

Good job though!!
