Depending how often you going to use it. In anyways I'd stick with a hawk, cossie needs to be a collectors car these days. To fragile I think.

Ford Rs's cosworths offer depreciation free motoring but like said above are fragile compared to new age cars they are also very dated to drive.
I had a low owner, low mileage, mint series one turbo, attracted a lot of the wrong sort in the end I sold it, covered 343 miles in 18 months and made a profit.

The cossie is a stunner but the standard gearbox and diff would concern me at that power level if you want to use all that BHP.
A very good pal of mine used to break diffs and boxes almost weekly in his 550bhp 3dr. He ended up spending a fortune on a quaife setup.

Personally, I don't think you will enjoy it as much as your spec C. It more of a 'drive to a meet and show it off ' car rather than a Sunday afternoon country road blaster.
You should admire a mint 3dr now whereas you can enjoy a modern Impreza.

Looks lovely and so rare to find a decent one!

But a car that age, running that power and with that transmission you'd have to regard as a project (one that you may have to invest in) and it'll feel like a dinosaur, albeit a very entertaining one, compared to the spec c.

I had a standard sierra cossie for ten months back in 1987 until the endless damage caused by people trying to pinch it finally sickened me off. Nice cars in their day but bears no comparison to an Impreza Spec C. The engine was annoyingly noisy, particularly at 4k plus revs, so heaven knows what 500 bhp will sound like. Looks like a recipe for spending more time under the bonnet than behind the wheel.

There is a thread on passion ford about that car, many people mentioning about the gearbox and diff basically it will not last long at all...

being that old regardless of what been done around the 500hp mark its gonna get problems if you do buy be prepared to put a decent box and spent many hours under the bonnet, my brother was looking at this car to buy then end up buying a stunning escort

Two completely different cars so impossible to compare. As much as I like my impreza I wouldn't have to think twice and would have a cossie in an instant. But only as a weekend/car just for shows. I would be too scared to drive it anywhere though.

I remember a few years back I went to an rsoc meet and there was an old boy there in a 15k miles black RS500, he was so worried about the car he put his full steering wheel lock on it got out and stood next to it, Litterally didn't leave it's side.

I have a 3 door cossie and my05 jdm sti, both running similar power and the area the cossie excels is the brutal power delivery, the difference between off and on boost is great and makes it feel far faster than it is, also rear wheel drive is great fun, but as a regular use car the sti is far better. Don't get me wrong I would never sell it and running costs are very low with classic insurance but they are a car for irregular use and take a bit of looking after, parts are not easy to find. Buy a good one and you will enjoy it but get a bad one and you will regret it, they are more fragile than the subaru but immense fun when working properly. If I had to sell one it wouldn't be the cossie, but hopefully I can keep the two.

It will be a very different drive: a straight line car, as you'd not want to plant you foot going through a corner unless you enjoy looking out of the side window. As others have said, the transmission will need looking at. I have a friend who went through several prop shafts with only 440bhp.

Personally i'd say keep the spec c, i don't think you would be able to relax and cane it, you will just be waiting for something to break, and having been there it's not a nice feeling owning something that can't be trusted.

The spec c is the ideal car for me, but i just can't justify the expenditure at this moment in time as the mrs would have me for everything.:lol1:
