Bought car with private plates

HI. I bought car from dealer. Because it was far from London, i said that i can buy this car but need to take this car the same day.
So, they sold me car with private plates. Dealer said that I'm gonna receive by post paperwork and then I can put original plates on ( got them in the boot) .
Two questions.
Are they going to send me new road tax disc ? Or I need to buy new on ?
And second, dealer said that when papers will come i should bin private plates. But I'm thinking, am I not a owner of this private plates now ? Maybe I can do something with them? Use or sell.

One more thing. May I insure this car now , with private plates and change insurance later?

Thanks.

if i am correct i believe by paperwork they mean plate transfer documents? if that is the case it would seem they have not sold you the private plate so they still own it the tax disc i believe you send to dvla who will issue you with a replacement with new reg on it. you can insure the car on the private plate and then change it with insurance later

Have you filled in the log book? Tax will be changed but it will be sent to the registered keeper only.

NO. Hope they gonna send this to dealer and they will send to me after.

I'm really surprise they told me to throw away those private plates. Why owner dont want them back?

The owner of the plates will just get a new set of plates made up when they get the plates documents back.

The original plates in the boot are useless your highly unlikely to get that registration back you will just get an unused one from the dvla database.

I would have thought if you bought the car you own whatever reg is on it?

Wrong, it is highly likely that you will get the original number back! 99% of the time you do as DVLA 'park' them for this reason.

Not sure if it's the same as buying privately, but I know for 100% if you buy a car from a private seller with a cherished plate on it, it's up to you the seller to do the decent thing and give the seller his plate back, BUT legally you are entitled to keep the plate and the seller can't do anything about it.

When will people learn. You bought a car without signing the paperwork! I presume you paid for the car-cash?

It will probably be okay but why do people do this. :cuckoo:

if the private plate is on the logbook and you signed the logbook you are the owner of the plates, ask craigo on this as he sold a car to that well known scoobynet idiot jimmyinrugby with a private plate on, jimmy promised to return the plate to craigo but of course didnt and craigo lost the plate and couldnt recover it.

also as i have a private plate that has been on several imprezas i can confirm the car usually reverts back to its original number plate when the private plate is removed.

if you haven't signed the logbook you are not the owner of the car so i hope you have a receipt or something similar.

This is true, I know people that have lost plates this way...

You as the new 'Keeper' take possession of the car and tha plate, unless you have signed an agreement to give the plate back.
When I send paperwork off to DVLA I always ask to have the original plate back on.
DONT send the taxidsc back until you have the new one, they will not ask for it until they have sent you the new one out and they send you an envelope to send it back in.

The actual plates will be pretty much useless once they are changed over.

yes you can insure it under the private plates, just need to change them over with the insurance company when you get the paper work back, some companys do charge a fee for this, i've only had this happen once in 19 years :D

Just out of curiosity...... what is the private plate.

Looks like you have good legal title over the use of the plate LOL Signing the logbook is to do with being the keeper. The car actually became yours when the contract of sale was finalised by handing over the cash (consideration).

Guess I was in the other 1% then.

Unless the car was taken without the registration document because it's already gone to the DVLA with a v317 form claiming grantee/appointee status. This dictates ownership of the 'mark' Which gives the new owner no rights to the reg.

Rescue Dude 08 May 2012 12:29 PM

Your local DVLA office can issue a new tax disc with the correct reg number on but they'll need to see the certificate entitling the car to have the 'new' reg number.

Don't worry guys. I've got receipt and invoice. Paid by transfer. It was quiet large trader (around 300 cars). Didnt sign logbook, guy said that first they have to transfer plates.
Thanks for answers.
Btw, is good u dont know what car I bought. I think u would kill me on this forum :)

Jamescsti 08 May 2012 06:39 PM

So what car was it?

komar80 08 May 2012 06:54 PM

Lancer :)

Jamo 08 May 2012 07:28 PM

Im surprised you didnt go to the register to ask this?

Lee247 09 May 2012 12:38 AM

The plates do not go with the car. I have sold two cars and my private plate stays with me. I have a registration document for both. One goes with the car and the other stays with me, irrespective of what plates are on the vehicle at the time of sale :thumb:

As we demonstrated in the other thread there's no many on here who do own a scooby now though. :wonder:
