STI version ????!

Take a look at the car in the link. My pal is interested in it but it just doesn't seem right to me.

The seller swears its an original STI and the applied model code comes back as an STI, but there is no numbered plaque in the bay for starters according to the seller.

M4RKG 03 May 2012 12:42 PM

Mines an STI and doesnt have a plaque anywhere... but is confirmed as an STI on the VIN plate

classic Subaru Si 03 May 2012 12:46 PM

just looks plain nasty to me to be honest, I wouldn't touch it with yours pal...

MattyB1983 03 May 2012 12:47 PM

I thought the very first STI's had the numbered plaque on the drivers side suspension turret..

I'm sure early STI's had the same applied code as the same year WRX - they got the plaque added as you have shown. This was because they were taken off of the production line and then built up as STI's.

That cars applied code is GC8B48D = WRX (STI's of the same year would have had the same code though).

Later STI's would have had the last '8' swapped for an 'E' in the applied code.

I would think the guy has got confused with the applied code and that car is actually just a WRX.

RICHARD J 03 May 2012 12:59 PM

The VIN plate has the model code on it to identify it. If the plate is missing I'd be suspicious.

SPORTWAGONROY 03 May 2012 01:00 PM

They do mate 1st gen Sti were taken and tuned by Sti but later Sti were done in factory so never got a plaque

jayallen 03 May 2012 01:01 PM

Doesnt look like an STI to me, the WRX and STI of that year shares the same model code so the model code doesnt prove what it is....I cant see the i/c spray bottle so IMO its a WRX

MattyB1983 03 May 2012 01:25 PM

Thanks guys,
I knew it should of had a plaque.

Yep, it's a WRX.

myblackwrx 03 May 2012 01:28 PM

Incorrect rear spoiler (possibly changed though)
280bhp :lol1:
Did they do the earliest STI in Red?
Pretty sure my 93 WRX had all those alloy bits on it and a closed deck block :)

mach 03 May 2012 02:03 PM

black slanted intercooler no water spray,no "tuned by STI" decal on the alternator guard, wrx interior(not red stiched steering wheel or gear knob) plus like said before no plaque(though can sell you mine 150/200 plaque if you want, only thing i have left of mine)

MattyB1983 03 May 2012 04:16 PM

Well,
I gave all the evidence to the seller and explained that his car is infact not an STI but just a WRX. Would he believe me,,,,,NOPE...

g7prs 03 May 2012 04:19 PM

Should the ariel not be at the rear?

KAS35RSTI 03 May 2012 04:19 PM

It should have a silver intercooler

Not on an early car.

tubbytommy 03 May 2012 04:26 PM

some tool has painted the bonnet black and stuck a shopping list on the side.
walk away!

MattyB1983 03 May 2012 04:30 PM

It wasn't for me buddy. A pal showed some interest and sent me the link. I think he thought if it was a genuine STI and could come for a few hundred quid it would be a bit of fun until it blew up.

I knew it wasn't an STI but the applied model code threw me to be honest, didn't know they had the same code as a WRX.

Dirk Diggler 75 03 May 2012 04:39 PM

Interior looks like it's from a Turbo 2000 model ........

MattyB1983 04 May 2012 10:11 AM

This is the vin plate..

As said - the early STI were hand 'built' by taking WRX's off the production line and giving them the STI treatment. They were then given the STI plaque on the suspension turret hence why the applied code is the same. In later versions STI's were mass produced on a production line so where given their own applied code.

Without the STI plaque there is no way of proving it is an STI and not a tarted WRX being called an STI.

99greenwagon 04 May 2012 10:42 AM

its a wrx.;)

MattyB1983 04 May 2012 03:19 PM

Can someone else message him, he doesn't believe a word I say.

zippy! 04 May 2012 03:25 PM
