A mate at work says he read what the top five places are in the JD Power survey last weekend.

He says they are Lexus LS400, the Toyota Yaris, the Lexus GS300 and the BMW 7-Series and the Lexus IS200 and the Rover 75 share fifth place.

Anyone hear anything about where Subaru came?

Or is all this ancient news?

JoeyDeacon 11 April 2001 02:51 PM

Rover 75 in 5th Place!!!

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me!! If you have ever been in a rover 75 you would know there is no way it could finish in the top 5.

Where did he allegedly read this??

fdpxfunix 11 April 2001 03:22 PM

All

Correct me if I'm wrong, but . . . . .

In last years JD power survey Subaru were 1st and 2nd. (not sure what year of car they surveyed tho)

I'm sure it was Lagacy (in with the farm crowd so the survey said) 1st, and 2nd Scoob.

For the last 3 years Subaru have been 1st or 2nd.

Kevmac - the JD Power survey covers cars which were 3 years old last year, yes??

Cant remember if the Rover 75 is that old - is it?????

I would think that Top Gear is keeping it all a very closely guarded secret, wouldnt you??

Lexus could do well I must admit

But would be most surprised if Rover came anywhere near!

sheepie_shagger 11 April 2001 06:59 PM

whatcha expect, those maufacturer's only sell 6 cars a week, of course there'll be lots more discruntled customers from models that sell in the hundreds of thousands. jd powers sucks, bares no relation to how reliable cars are per volume of sales because toffy nosed lexus twits only want to talk about their cars, other drivers only want to drive them, and when something goes wrong on a best seller there are literally thousands of people wanting to complain because a problem usually effects an entire production run.
and as for Suburu, i bet we wouldn't complain even if something did go wrong with the car, we love them too much.

CLS 11 April 2001 10:50 PM

Playing devils advocate sheepie I'd expect a cheap car to break down. If I had a JD power winner I'd go bloody ballistic if it let me down. No I don't have a Lexus, I drive a MY00 turbo and yes the interior map light went.
I do live in fear of clutch problems however, and of hesitation problems at 3000 revs. Don't even get me started on fuel economy.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Mick 11 April 2001 11:08 PM

How come in JD Power survey Impreza owners whinge about fuel economy in a 0-60 5-6 sec car and Jaguar owners at 15 mpg seem quite happy ?

Do we expect the fuel economy of a "500 cc, Lean-burn, direct injection, Citroen Diane turbo-diesel with supplementary passenger 'Pedal-assist'(? -you may well ask http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif " (Shudder http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif ) and the performance of a Porsche to be combined in the same vehicle ?????

Mick 11 April 2001 11:30 PM

CLS - not you specifically M8. It's just before purchasing a Scooby I wanted to see where they lost points in the JD power! - Major points loss seemed to be fuel. but lows 20s enjoying oneself around town & country roads and 28 ish on motorways seems OK to me! Jag owners seemed happy with 15 mpg - its what one would expect from a heavy vehicle with a large engine!

Know what I mean ? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

CLS 11 April 2001 11:44 PM

Mick, Totally agree with you 100%
My last car was a Nissan Primera SRi which when driven with enthusiasm didn't do much better than my scooby, if at all!
Now what would I rather drive....mmm..I wonder? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

CharlesW 11 April 2001 11:59 PM

I am afraid it is bad news. See the page on Sky news website about Rover turning the corner

rapiddescent 12 April 2001 12:29 AM

cost of ownership has risen a lot. last week at knockhill, a straw poll round some scooby owners there showed that insurance has gone up 50-100% over the last 3 years for people in all sorts of postcodes.

I assume that everything will be revealed in the next programme this evening.

Dave T-S 12 April 2001 07:54 AM

Well, I can tell you the results without waiting for Top Gear ("it was crap again") - and Subaru aren't even in the top 10......

CharlesW and the Sky report were indeed right:

1 = Lexus LS400
2 = Toyota Yaris
3 = Lexus GS300
4 = BMW 7 series
5 = Rover 75
5 = Lexus IS200
7 = Jag XJ
8 = Merc E class
9 = BMW 5 series
10 = Toyota Camry

Wingers queue here........ http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Toyota and Lexus Im not surprised, honestly they are as good if not better than Subaru dealers.

Rover well thats down to the drivers, my missus mother thinks rover are the best manufacturer there is. Thats it, they are the best, no dispute.

I personally think the JD Power ratings have gone to Subarus head, Ive not been as impressed with the dealers as I was, and am hoping that Days the first dealer I used are as good when I go back to them.

Lets face it though, for all the fuss, the top few arent that much better than the next few etc, all you should be worried about is the dogs at the bottom of the list.

I have to disagree with the people who think the Rover 75 is pants. No i wouldnt have one, but i have driven them many a time and know people who own them, and it is a cracking car for the money. Its knocked together far better than any other Rover for years, wait for the X10 (or similar named) sports version you never know it might give the scooby a run for its money ??? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/redface.gif: http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif

Chins 12 April 2001 09:04 AM

Impreza was 43rd in survey. Cost of ownership is what killed its ratings

Subaru dont even get a gold, silver or bronze plaque this year

Full results in Top Gear magazine out now.

Mungo 12 April 2001 10:01 AM

Just remember that JDPower is based on expectations. Now that Subaru have been top for the past couple of years, I'm sure people's expectations have risen, and Subaru have just not been able to deliver.
Also, when the P-reg and R-reg surveys were done, I'm sure most Subaru owners were farmers or enthusiasts, who were less likely to grumble. Now that Joe Public buys more Subarus (due to JDPower), there are far more people who "didn't expect fuel economy to be so bad" or "didn't expect a £20k car to rattle" or "expected it to go 12k miles between services" etc.
As has been pointed out here ad infinitum, most Subarus are high performance, high maintenance, but high value for money too.

robski 12 April 2001 10:20 AM

Think Mungo has hit the nail well and truly on the head.

Im sure there are people out there who think the scoob is going to cost the same to run as a mondeo/vectra.

So they get the performance for free! Well no, you just pay closer to supercar prices to keep it on the road.

Are the piston slap cars included in this years "crop"?

Another factor Im sure will start to happen is that people wil have seen how Subarus have developed a cult status due to the help of JD Powers, so you are going to get an increasing number of people rating everything about their car highly, so that they have the best.

TonyFlow 12 April 2001 10:32 AM

I would never let a survey such as this decide on which car I will own!
Granted, its nice to see your car/manufacturer sitting pretty at no.1 but surely its down to personal opinion if a car is good/bad/ugly etc.
Some people might not mind high maintenance cars, some people might.
If i see a car that i like, I will do a little research on it, find out its performance/consumption etc, Then i will test drive it! If I want it I will buy it, and I wouldnt expect anything more than the research has told me!
If on paper it said the car would do 20mpg, I knew that, i bought it knowing that - whats the problem????

Its not as if you can take it with you is it? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

AJC 12 April 2001 10:44 AM

I think that the JDPower surveys are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Because we don't have any formal method of monitoring the car manufacturers then JDPower is at least giving us the opportunity to make our voices heard. The downside is that the types of people who tend to fill out these surveys are the ones who are either incredibly passionate about the cars or totally p*ssed off with them. I've always been surprised that Subaru have come top of this survey given some of the downsides of Impreza Turbo ownership plus I have to say that I really don't rate either of the 3 dealers that I've been involved with that highly at all. A certain arrogance is an expression that springs to mind.

Even though I imported my car from Europe, I still decided to fork out my hard earned cash partly on the basis of things like results of the JDPower survey. It's been interesting reading some of the threads about things like clutch slipping, piston slap, engine surging etc and I hope that they don't happen to me. However, a forum like this bulletin board allows people to give voice to these sorts of issues in a way that perhaps just doesn't happen with Ford, Vauxhall etc. and perhaps it's mainly a case of people being passionate about something that they really care about which raises its profile over and above its real impact?

Anyway, just my musings on the subject.

Cheers

Andrew

DOH!! I forgot about this thread as I was posting the full results of the JD Power survey. Have a look at

lpitt 12 April 2001 01:45 PM

Ok so the Scooby came 43rd.

Who cares. I sure didn't buy one on the strength of the JD Power survey. Also check out the review and see the reason why.

It did very well on all but ownership and who's surprised. After all insurance has rocketed, with some companies refusing to touch it, and servicing is high during warranty period but from my experience the customer service is good.

Let's not autopsy this. Just let it go and revel in the fact of 'how many other cars have the grins per £ of the Impreza?'

Laurence
