Help!!!! missfire/ limp mode

Hi, hope someone can help. Purchased a classic uk Turbo 2000 on April 1st ( jokes on mehttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...es/ponder2.gif) on the test drive the car miss fired when it got to about 5k revs when gunned. The guy said it had never happend beforehttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...es/ponder2.gif. It was low on fuel so I took it thinking it was something silly.

I filled the tank with no change.

I looked on forums and read to clean the MAF sensor which I done.....no change. Then I changed the Knock sensor.... still no changehttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...s/confused.gif

There are no codes coming up as I've checked this also?

Anyone any idea or can anyone recomend a garage that won't take the P in the North Lanarkshire area?

The car is supposed to be mapped by TSL it has a Hayward and Scott exaust and a green air filter. thats about it.

Receipts for Exhaust dating back to 2007.

Thanks in advance for replieshttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/thumb.gif

Did the "missfire" feel like hitting a brick wall, ie lost all power. Is it more like 4.5k RPM and does it do it all the time at 4.5k RPM? Are you sure there is no fault code, the CEL bulb could just be blown!

Davec30 25 April 2012 08:54 PM

When accelerating if done slowly it seems ok until about 5k then the only way I can describe it is going on and off the power quickly! When I replaced the knock sensor the connection came loose and the check engine light came on I checked the code and it was the knock sensor.and the missing was a lot worse. I connected it back up and the check light went out and no codes came up after a further check it went back to the way it was:confused:

I thought it might have been the torque setting of knock sensor but that seems ok?

Full power is not lost!

stualex 25 April 2012 09:11 PM

Will it actually rev past 5K at all?

It does but it kangaroos. when I changed the knock sensor and the connection came loose, it went into limp mode with the check light on. it feels similar to that. like it is going of and on quickly.

it doesn't do this when the the car is stationary and it ticks over fine:confused:

HT leads or coilpack

I'll check this also!

Sounds like fuel cut. Is she over boosting?

I took it to Hypertech in bonnybridge who took it for a drive and told me to change the plugs to pfr7b and set them to .6mm, which I did and this has made it better but it is still doing it! You can feather it all the way up the revs and sometimes its not doing it at :brickwall

It could be a dirty boost solenoid causing a hunting effect whilst on boost, its quite common and will not show a fault code, over boost fuel cut will show a fault code so it wont be that. Try cleaning your solenoid out with carb cleaner or wd40.

Cheers Iain

Thinking about it, if the missfire you felt on the test drive was whilst on boost and was quite violent but wasnt fuel cut due to an over boost it could have been the boost solenoid sticking/failing shut whilst on boost which would give a nasty sudden drop in power to wastegate pressure.

Cheers Iain

When it was in the garage they said it looked like the guy I bought it off had tried to fix the problem as it has new hts on it!

How do I clean the solenoid ?

Cheers for the help

Dave.

does it have a dump valve fitted m8? they can stick if the springs weak, just a thought

It has an adjustable bov which I can close completely.... I'll give that a go tomorrow:thumb:

Mine did the same before, found out it was the O2 sensor, no wonder emmission test failed on MOT.

Cheers for that:thumb:

Another check to add to the list! I never got the chance to check anything today as the rain is coming down in buckets:cry:

Hopefully I can get out after work tomorrow!

I take it you just go to a garage and they check your emissions and that let's you know if the o2 sensor is working correctly?

Not been out in the car for a few days but this is where I am;

There are new ht leads on it!= no change!

I have changed the plugs and regapped = very little change!

Closed off the bov= no change!

Noticed today that the fuel pump has became noisy, a constant buzzing noise :wonder:
And when under the bonnet the fuel pipes coming from the filter are making a ticking noise, is this normal:wonder:
I have no idea if the pump is std or after market!

(the noise from the fuel pipes has always been there! I think!)

I was going to clean the boost solenoid before this noise from the pump appeared!
Could the pump be the root of my problem:wonder:

O have also notice when driving at 30 in 4th it seems to hunting for fuel?

Thanks for the help so far:thumb:

You will be able to feel the injector pulses through the fuel lines from the filter, a dirty solenoid will defo give the sensation of hunting, I would defo give the solenoid and attached pipework a damn good clean out and give the solenoid a small blast of wd40, if you connect the x2 2pin green connectors together under the dash on the drivers side and turn on the ignition the solenoid will pulse as you clean it through with carb cleaner, if its dirty it will sound very dull and quiet, as you clean it through you will her the ticking get clearer and louder, switch off ignition, disconnect green connectors, ensure solenoid is connected correctly and go for a drive.

Cheers Iain

Cheers Iain,

I'll give it a clean tonight after work, hopefully this will solve it!

Any ideas on the fuel filter noise, would I be better off changing it?

Thanks again

Dave.

had a nissan pulsar gti-r that did this changed fuel filter and that sorted it. best way to check is disconnect return line and turn ignition on.
probably best to have someone help you with this just in case im wrong as you will have petrol everywhere.

oh and reason was lack of fuel making its way through plus had same pump noise.

hope that helps???

I just gave the boost solenoid a clean out and It's ticking loudly. Went for a drive and its still doing it!!

I might give the fuel filter a go at the weekend! This is doing my head in!!:brickwall

ramboscooby 24 May 2012 04:24 PM

let us know if it was filter mate

Well eventually got round to changing the fuel filter and pump, went out for a run and It's still doing it:brickwall

Looks like a visit to a specialist is on the cards!

Try connecting the turbo outlet straight to the actuator with a short piece of hose so you are running on wastegate pressure alone if the hunting is not there in this configuration then it could be the solenoid.

Also have a look to see if any of the pipework from the manifold to the map sensor have come free or split, I have seen this on a STD 99 classic where the owner had lump acceleration and no cel and it was a pipe off the map sensor, it was unusual for it not to throw up a code but that's what it was.

Are you running the STD turbo intake hose?

Cheers Iain

Yes, std turbo intake hose! I'll check all the pipes again and make sure there's no leaks.

I have no idea about connecting the turbo outlet to the actuator:wonder:
First turbo car!!! If there is no loose pipework or leaks then I think It's time for someone who knows what their doing to take a look!

Thanks again and sorry for delay.

Finally took the car to Hypertech at bonnybridge today as the car had still been hesitating on boost. After 3 test drives and a smoke test Duncan put a coil pack from one of the guys P1 onto mine, took it out and all was fine! Should have went there in the first place and I would have saved a packet replacing everything:wonder:

New coil pack on the cards!
