You could have them shotblasted, me though would just buy STI brembos as they're alloy and dont rust, oh and theyre good for stopping you aswell lol.

Jimbob 24 April 2012 10:04 PM

Thats nothing tbh, wire brush and some paint jobs a good one.

bustaMOVEs 24 April 2012 10:06 PM

Send them to ian he does wonders

DAMCHIEF 24 April 2012 10:09 PM

I sent mine to Godspeed for refurb. They did a superb job, highly recommended.

It LOOKS like it'd just come off but trust me it isn't. I've tried it with a wire wheel on my battery drill, maybe i'll get the hammer drill out tomorrow instead.

A set I got refurbed were quite bad so took mine into work, we've got a polishing shop, and got them down to shiny metal :) so it may be worth finding someone in your area who has a heavy duty polishing machine that can do it for you.

Go at it with a screw driver and chisel it off. Or send to Godspeed for a refurb and new stainless pistons well worth it.

craigo 24 April 2012 10:44 PM

christ mate, that looks like something from aliens ....... :(

Qwertyco 24 April 2012 10:54 PM

have you split the calipers in half?

Not as yet, the pins are holding it together as they are just as rusty. I've got new pins/seals etc on the way.
I'm probably going to get shot for saying this but i was contemplating re-using the pistons. :freak3: After a clean up/wet and dry????
£80 for a new set of pistons.

Lol, i bought them from a picture showing the other side, seller saying they were "ready to be used".

Kwik 25 April 2012 10:20 AM

Can i get away with re-using the pistons?

my94wrx 25 April 2012 10:36 AM

i wouldnt waste your time on them send them back for a refund, when you get these ready to gohttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-IMPREZA-WRX-TURBO-PAIR-4-POT-CALIPERS-BRAKE-PADS-BRAND-NEW-LEGACY-/330712916409?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& fits=Car+Make%3ASubaru&hash=item4d0006a1b9

there not fit for the purpose mate. refund possible ..

Bristol98 25 April 2012 10:49 AM

maybe, would be better off replacing with stainless pistons whilst they are apart though....

Qwertyco 25 April 2012 12:03 PM

You can't buy the seal rings that join the 2 halves together.

Stainless pistons can be had for about £80.

Unless you paid about £20 for the pair, they are just not worth refurbishing.
I just refurbished a pair that cost me £55.
After parts alone without any cost for my considerable amount of labour,
I sold them for £200 and still made a loss.
WRX PRO calipers are £160 a pair brand new.

Rusty calipers - £55
Pistons - £80
Seal kit - £30
spring/pin kit - £25
Bead blasting - £15
paint - £10
= £205 without any labour.

Kwik 25 April 2012 12:18 PM

I've got the seal's £20, Pin kit £15 on its way. I paid £100 for calipers/pads and discs inc P&P.
I think i'll carry on with it, i've had enough problems with the seller as it is, i'll just re-use the piston's and keep a close eye on them.

joey_turbo 25 April 2012 01:35 PM

Do a search. Someone on here had a bad set, soaked them in a fluid for a few days, and they came out like new.

brendy76 25 April 2012 02:50 PM

if you diy properly, it doesnt cost that much.

I used a wire drill attachment and pressed hard to get the really stubborn stuff off,
New seals and pistons were used though I just bought oem style plated pistons as these ones had lasted pretty much 10 year before needing done, I guess I may not have the car in another 10 so no point paying the premium.
They looked like this once split, from a distance they didnt look so bad but the pots were slightly pitted and needed replacing as they were catching, one was pretty much siezed. Can you guess which one?
I used Jap import parts and Bigg Red for parts.

You can see where I had wire drilled the inner surfaces to remove the heavy rusting.

When finished, looked grand and stopped the car the way it should from factory again.

Qwertyco 25 April 2012 03:02 PM

knock off all the loose stuff then soak them in warm vinegar (14p a pint at tesco) for a few days.
Then do it again!
and again.

Good price for the bits kits, where did you get them from?

Scoobyworx will give you a discount on stainless pistons if you mention this site.
I have some caliper half seal washers I had made up if you need them, £1 each.

That's what I did, but the minimum order was for 50.
I have 46 left!

It's not what you know, but who you know :thumb: Thing is, no company will make them if you say there for brakes (liability reasons) You just need seals of the right dimensions and impervious to heat and Polyethylene glycol.

If you have some new seals to hand that you know fit perfectly, would you mind pm'ing me the measurements?

Replied mate.

Qwertyco has said he has some left over from when he had them made. Maybe he will sell you some and that maybe a quicker option for you. If not let me know and im sure i will be able to help you out.

Godspeed Brakes 25 April 2012 08:06 PM

The seal kits we supply come with the seals in between the 2 caliper halves so I loads of used ones I have kept which are in perfect condition if you want some , I also have a set of brand new pistons you can have for £40 which I have taken out of a pair of calipers which were upgraded to stainless pistons.

Or we also supply 8 stainless pistons and a seal kit for a pair of front calipers for £99 plus P&P

Kwik 25 April 2012 09:09 PM

Lovely, YHPM also :)

There you go, job sorted!

It was a few years ago when I was looking for the small seals, and no-one could supply them.
A local gasket place made them for me, now everyone has them!
