Buying Second Hand & Mileage
 

Afternoon All

Its that time of year when i am looking for another runabout for work. Got my eye on a saab 93.
Is mileage much to worry about these?. Looking to spend 2-3k and most seem to be around the 100k mileage or over.
They do seem to run for ever from what i can see as long as they are in good nick.

Its a diesel i am looking at more than petrol.

I'd prefer 2 owners with 100k motorway miles than 4 owners and 50k London miles. Check Saab parts prices. My 205 td was still running sweetly with 220k on clock.

Exactly as David said, Id rather have a motorway work horse than something thats been doing 1mile trips to the supermarket all its life.

Saabs are pretty solid but not cheap to fix but most cars in this day and age should be capable of 200k if looked after. Its not like we are living in the 90's when the engineering wasnt quite what it is today

I just bought a mint condition 2003 9-2 2.0l Aero (210bhp) with every receipt from new including the original bill of sale. 1 owner from new mostly motorway miles with 99k on it. It drives pretty much like new. It has virtually every option fitted. Paid £2,400.

I would not normally buy a car with that miles but the condition, the way it drives and the wedge of receipts convinced me it was a cared for car with many miles left in it.

Take it your pleased with it too, never had a saab and fancied one for ages. kind of tempted to get a petrol one as you seem to be able to get a cracking bargain on them too as diesels are significantly more at the minute.

Yes, very pleased. Mine is the Aero model, it also has Hirsch suspension upgrade which makes it a little lower than std, it rides a little hard but handles really well and is not uncomfortable. Getting 24 around town 32 combined and up to 40 on a run which isn't too bad given the weight and power of the car.

My tractor powered 9-3 is on 114k miles - I bought it ex-demo with 1500 miles on so can confirm it's a great mile muncher.

Watch out for front springs. One of mine went recently and a bit of searching turned up a 28 page thread on a Saab forum. Before it went wrong, Saab UK were paying for (or towards) spring replacement.

One of the reasons mine is on Hirsch springs (all round) which are much tougher:) - fitted by Abbott Racing (according to the receipt)at 92K:)

snapped front springs are a common fault apparently as are worn suspension arms. keys are not cheap to buy, you want both keys and check they both work, replacements are £ 100.00 or so incl. programming or £500.00 if you loose both!

As others have said I would prefer high miles and a younger car than an old car with low miles as this indicates a that it has been sat at a fairly constant speed down a motorway, fewer cold starts and fewer town pot holes.

I've got a 114k 1996 Volvo s70 T5 that feels younger and fresher to drive than the 2005 68k miles ST220 it replaced. Ordinarily, I'm a total freak with high mileage and hate anything much over 75-80k. However, I think it very much depends on the car and the Volvo feels tight and has a reputation for going and going.
