Take it to someone who knows these engines as they do have rattles and strange noises as standard. So could be worrying over nothing.

Tbho going about it to cheap will only end in another engine rebuild fella,if your going to do a engine overhaul then do it all so it doesn't have to be done twice and cost more than it has too!

Ive never known a small end fail, it's often mistaken for the big end, before pulling it out drain the oil through a clean cloth and check for copper shards, this would suggest big end failure.

yea i will drain the oil first, it rattles slightly at around 2-3.5 rpm but not on cold start? its an odd one. if worst comes to worst and its bottom end which i think is most likley what do i need to buy?
crank
bearings
rods

yes it will fit and its only the bottom end, nothing to do with the manifolds ,your heads determine whether the manis will fit
