I bought a 3g off a mate, he'd had a upgrade, so i bought a payg o2 sim, put credit on it to cover the £15 o2 take to unlock it, filled in the online form, within a couple of days a text came through saying it was unlocked. Now working on virgin.

as above get payg simcard and add credit to cover cost of unlock.you get text within day or so then just sync phone with itunes and its then unlocked properly.o2 dont actually unlock the phone itunes do when you sync it.

nothingjust sync it to itunes with the o2 simcard in and then unplug, swap sim and sync again to check all unlocked.did my old 3gs with o2 and after filling the online form on the o2 site i had text the next day.sync phone and all sorted.

I've just unlocked my old 3GS as I was selling it and being unlocked was obviously more desirable. Called Vodafone and they send the request to apple. 48 hrs or so and you plug the phone in with the new sim into iTunes and bobs your uncle. It will literally say the phone is unlocked.

If the phone was o2 pay monthly then it's free, £15 on payg.

As above, do it officially with the network. It is a pain to do otherwise (changing the baseband etc..) and O2 are the best network (they just want your money :) ). Orange are painful as you have to be with them for a certain amount of time and they fight to unlock the phone even though they charge you £20.
