Achievable 300bhp bugeye
Hi I'm starting my latest project , 2001 bugeye
It's not going to be anything special I'm looking for a solid 300hp flywheel to start ,as I understand they are around 220 ish standard , so no big jump Got exhaust , up pipe ,and crappy fleabay induction (that's got to come off ) Next is fuel pump , pinks and finally map Was going to go with fmic ,but not 100% at what point you really benefit or need one Would the standard I/c be up to 300 or should I go sti at least Like I said not after big power (for now ) I would think that's a down to earth figure To achieve Oh forgot , I've put an aUquamist water injection set up on it that I had kicking about (not put nozzle in ) Won't be needing it yet , till the time proper power comes Any advice appreciated Cheers tony |
Don't think your turbo will be quite up to the job mate.
|
It should , so I've been told by a well known tuner , I was just wondering what tune standard intercoolers will go to
Told tuner I was gonna go front mount , but don't want the hassle just yet |
A Standard TD04 will max out at around 280, you'll definitely need another turbo to reach your 300 target.
The standard TMIC should be okay though. |
You have a TD04 in there don't you. Very unlikely it will achieve 300bhp buddy, it will get close. Also bare in mind it will be on its limit at circa 280.
Front mount isn't required at that power but if you intend on going further in the future then you may as well fit one, or, STI top mount will be happy upto near 400. |
Just get a sti tmic, sti injectors, vf35 turbo and a remap and your well on your way to over 300.
I have a vf35 turbo up for sale if your interested that made 340bhp with the right mods [;)] |
Hi there, well many have been there and wore the T-shirt, so if you take notice you will be in safe hands. Firstly lets understand the weak point of the WRX then at east your aware of the threshold before things start to go wrong.
The Gearbox is a good unit, but will not take abuse, and its also advised that you do not push huge power through it unless your prepared to shell out for a new uprated unit, so if your considering power hunting, then with the gearbox in mind you need to stay well under 350/350. The Engine does not have forged internals, and has cast pistons, so again with a good mapper just be careful how far you want to push the motor, I would say 380 max before you start to come into the danger zone. The Brakes are not up to much standard, but can be helped with some good fast road setup disc and pads combo, but I would recommend swapping out for something that will stop you once you have upped the power output, Brembo's are a good and cheap way of getting the best value for money. The Suspension again is very ferry like, and again can benefit from a cheap STI set up, this will help when you realise that you have started to drive a little more aggressively. Ok, there are a few other things but I think they are the main. Obviously the clutch will be subject to more abuse, so this will need to be watched, but as you said 300bhp initially I think all the above will fine inc the clutch. Getting to 300bhp: Turbo needs swapping out, the TD04 will not get there usually, I think 280bhp is about the max you will see. The WRX intercooler is also going to stop you. Injectors wont see much over 300 if they can get there at all. Up pipe has a cat in it, must be removed. Exhaust has two more cats in it, at least one needs removing to enusre smooth flow. The 2 port boost solenoid will need changing to gain better control of boost. The fuel pump is now 10-12 year old, this Must be changed, a failed unit will cost you big time. What you need: VF35, VF30, or TD05 16G Turbo STI TMIC (top mount intercooler) STI Undertray STI Up pipe 2.5" or 3" decat or cat back exhaust 3 Port Boost solenoid Uprated Panel Filter retaining the oem intake (not CAI) STI Pink Injectors (good for 400bhp, so future proof) Walbro 255 Fuel pump. Remap (Andrew Carr recommended) I hope all this help. If needed I have a STI TMIC, VF35, STI up pipe, Under Tray that I will do a nice deal on all if needed. I may also have a set of Pink injectors. Regards, Rob |
Cheers chaps , that's what I need to know
I'm not disputing the turbo thing at all , I'm new ish to scoobys ( not cars I built a BMW e30 turbo so know a little ) also I had a classic with a td 05 16g and bits and bobs that was putting out 309.2 The trouble is when you start talking about modding ( even to well known tuners I can't help thinking all they see is £££££ And try and lure you in with all these wonderful promises , think its just a case of getting more into the scoobys and feel my way round for a while and get to know who's who and what's what Cheers tony |
just a thought....
sports panel air filter walbro 255 fuel pump de-cat center on exhaust sti up-pie sport cat downpipe 'pink' 550cc sti injectors vf28 turbo ngk pfr 7b spark plugs will see you over 300 maybe 320 bhp clutch and gearbox will be ok as long as you dont abuse it too many times lol other mods to think of if it just for road use uprated rear anti roll bar 22mm solid drop links front and rear grooved discs (godspeed is good) uprated front pads, dont bother with rears braided brake lines and DOT 5.1 fluid you can go further with it or less if you like..... its your feet on pedals so drive accordingly! |
just buy an STi...
by the time you have collected and fitted all the sti parts, the sti will have been cheaper and you would get the bonus of better brakes, diff, suspension, gearbox, engine, etc |

And the most expensive part....
A good mapping session. |
On a bug you can get very close to 300 on blob as they seem to make more.
I got 301 on a td04 with right mods/mapper on its limit but im happy. Can show graphs later as on phone at moment Next is vf34 to achive 340-350 and leave at that as box will be on the limit too |

Buying and STI is the obvious choice, however unless its a lack of knowledge to why the OP has bought the car then there is usually a good reason. Obvious ones are budget, they want a Subaru asap and dont want to wait around to afford a Bugeye> STI, so buy a Bugeye WRX for say 2.5k, and slowly modify it as money becomes available (normally the last Friday in a month LOL)
Other situations are the car they have found has already had a good deal of £ thrown at it, ie Coilovers, engine rebuild, Brakes, and one even on here recently was a built 2.1 engine.... These all sometimes make you choose the car rather than saving more to buy an STI. Rob |
i didnt think about that rob, you got a point, the reason i bought my wrx is the insurance side of things, its a £700 difference for me lol, i say good luck to the guy. im still spending now and ive finished the car lol
|
Is the insurance really that much different when you tell them about all your mods. I would hazard a guess and say that a standered STI is cheaper to insure than a WRX modded to 300bhp.
|
I cant comment on specific Insurance for each driver, but all I can say is that I have always paid between £540 - £900 for a Subaru, and I've had 8 of them. What I did notice is that when I went from UK300 (a typical wrx) to STI of the same age and similar value It went up by almost £300.
Another point is look at some of the big powered builds out there at the moment, some of them have started life as a WRX. From memory F1 CJE UK and TOFFEE ring a bell as extremely good builds and both cars started life as a WRX. Rob |

for my age and the convictions i got yes. some how an sti is way out of my price range (insurance) but im paying an arm and a leg now lol, but happy with what i got:thumb: good luck on your road modding your car man |
Hi let's sort this one out shall we , I'm not new to Cars at all , I'm relatively new to Subaru , that's all
All I wanted to know which parts support how much power Yes I could have gone out and bought an sti So let's cover that first Reason 1 please find me a running tax and tested bugeye sti for 2k Reason 2 it's a running project , please tell me were the fun is and going out and buying one already there (300hp) Reason 3 I enjoy working on cars (my brother owns a garage , was into evos , raced time attack , but he's Mitsubishi through and through so little knowledge of what parts work best for them Please please do not assume people are all as green as they first seem It's already gone from asking what parts work best to Why not buy an sti , might not know what I've bought , might be insurance Well afraid your all pissing up the wrong tree Thanks to the guys who answered in a direct manner , with this works that works To the guys who think I'm a newbie who maybe thinks I bought the wrong car or I can't afford Sti insurance WRONG I've just sold my m3 and classic and fancied starting a new project Simple as that In fact it's already started because I'm picking a td 05 16 g up tomorrow From a guy who deals with Andy forest All I asked was what parts for 300 work best in people's opinion And look at the rest of the bull**** speculation and telling what car to buy I know how much cars cost to mod , try modding an m3 or how about a 3.2 911 carrera or racing bikes for a few seasons Oh forgot should have got a standard car and kept my hands clean Sorry for the early rant in the early stages of being on the forum but it gets on my wick |
Ooooooohhhhhhh, ark at him...
Lol. |
Lol I'm not as mad as it comes across , just thought I would put it straight before it turns into ( he brought it by selling a lung ,but he must have smoked because he didn't get much for it )
And while I remember hands up all those who spent money modding a Subaru and got all there money back It's a hobby , for fun , not a financial investment ! |

Heres my graph on blob wrx waggon late 05 model on td04 http://s1080.photobucket.com/albums/...filter=noflash Not many peolpe have achevie figures as high i belive, but depends on mods/mapper:thumb: |
was gonna stick with the 04 but picking up an 05 tomorrow
so goes to show 300 is possible with a td 04 well peeps now chime in with how inacurate the dyno is (yawn ) hands up all those that said you cant funny how all those that say you cant, have parts to sell to to say you can (good deal mate honest) |
Havr done this to my classic uk turbo now has 328 bhp. take my advice. Sell it and buy a bug sti prodrive style if you like the bugs. remap and 330 all day. honest is not worth all the messing around. The interior, styling, seats, suspension, gearbox and brakes will never be up to a standard sti. never mind the insurance when you have to declare all th mods.

i will repeat i am doing this project for fun , the bugeye is not my daily driver its not even my second car i dont want an sti , i want to mod this one as a hobby to give me something to mess around with not even really to drive not one thats already done so all ive got to do is drive it why the hell would i want an sti interior ,seats , styling , i,ll repeat again its not a financial issue , if i wanted an sti i would have had one , simple i built a bmw turbo from a bare shell for fun , so why didnt i buy a 335 tt can you guys not understand the concept of a project car , if it goes bang , so what i,ll built it with a forged motor ,or might break it , it might get stripped out for trackdays , it might not , it will probably be 300hp or i might get proper into it and i spend to 400hp who knows ITS A PROJECT,HOBBY,INTEREST,TINKER WITH,NOT LIFE OR DEATH , I CAN SLEEP KNOWING ITS NOT AN STI GET IT YET:idea: |

If you are going to be happy at a 300bhp, fine the WRX will do the job, but if you decide to go further will hit so many limits on the WRX. My 2002 prodrive sti running over 380bhp, with masses of suspension mods, braking mods, etc is up at £5500. You do the math! Good luck with it... |
