Apple Macs infected with Flashback Trojan

More than half a million Macs are infected with the Flashback Trojan, a malware package designed to steal personal information, according to a Russian antivirus company
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-574.../?tag=mncol;1n

To see if you haven't got it: In terminal run:
Code:

defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
You should get this error:
Code:

The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist
Then run:
Code:

defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
You should get this error:
Code:

The domain/default pair of (/Users/YOURUSER/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist
If you do you are clean of this variant!
If it doesn't happen go here to fix it

Lies - we all know they don't get virii.

An0n0m0us 05 April 2012 03:28 PM

What all those Mac users who refuse to run an anti virus as it isn't needed might regret their attitude? No never surely?

(OSX user who runs anti virus as he knows no OS is virus free)

Tidgy 05 April 2012 03:34 PM

lmao, rotten apple strikes again

boxst 05 April 2012 03:35 PM

It'll happen more as the Mac OSX gets more popular. I'm surprised there isn't an iOS one yet, especially as you could Jailbreak it in a previous release just by opening a dummy PDF.

Cos its a pointless endevour, the hardware is no where near as good as a self built pc, so even if you wanted to run your own operating software your better starting with a pc

JackClark 05 April 2012 04:19 PM

Guess what? I don't have it, no surprise there as I don't run Java. If you do then Apple have made available the Java update that fixes it.

Third party software will always be a threat, Flash being the worst.

No OS is safe, but OSX is a thousand times safer than Windows.

I think you'll find Java is the worst! 57% of all Macs in the US infected!! That's unheard of in the world of Windows PCs!!! Also this proves Flash isn't dead since 57% of all Mac users in the US want and use Flash! :lol1:

They're good ... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/04...e_java_update/ ...

Apple released a security update for OS X Java on Tuesday, plugging a security vulnerability exploited by the latest Flashback Trojan.
The latest variant of the Mac-specific malware appeared on Monday and targeted a vulnerability in Java which was patched on Windows machines more than six weeks ago.

Still a long way to go before they catch up with windows. Running windows without any anti virus is like barebacking a $5 whore.

Thanks for that.

When you say run that stuff in 'terminal' what does that mean? Where do I find this 'terminal'?

The domain/default pair of (/Users/chris/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist. This is a Mac, stop panicking and have a great Easter Weekend, shame about the bloody hosepipe ban. End &

suggests that about 600,000 Macs have installed the malware - potentially allowing them to be hijacked and used as a "botnet".

It says that more than half that number are based in the US.
so 57% of 600,000 , not 57% of ALL macs in the US.

Slightly different

JackClark 05 April 2012 05:55 PM

It's still a massive number but to be honest I'm having trouble believing it, especially as the figures are from an Antivirus company. Having worked for an Antivirus company, hyping threats is money in the bank.
