FMIC on a 2001 bug WRX
 

Hi Everyone!

I'm after a FMIC for my 2001 WRX bug! But, just trying to figure it all out in my head first.

I've seen loads of pics on here of a pipe that goes from the back of the engine bay over the top of the engine, passenger side, then down (by the rad) into the intercooler. But, on my car, the expansion tank is there. So, how is everyone getting around this?

Relocating the expansion tank? to where?

LOL Cheers Tazz! That makes perfect sense! I've just checked, and most places dont seem to put the smaller tank in the pics of their kits!

My FMIC pipe just goes around the tank on my bug... I did however have to buy a smaller battery so the pipe on the other side fitted LOL

I've used a small pop bottle for my expansion tank and got a smaller battery.

Thought only a Perrin fmic came with a expansion tank kit .

I've got a japspeed on mine. It came with a smaller bottle.

Just to confirm, we are on about the overflow and not the header tank.

Reshard, what else have you got done to your wrx? Im pushing 290-300 at the moment and will be around the 330 mark with the sti pinks in, still dont feel the need to get an fmic.

Hi, just confirmed, it does come with a smaller expansion tank and bracket, which then relocates it slightly.

I have an STI tmic, pink injectors, upgrade fuel pump, sports cat (soon to be changed to complete decat! :norty: ) onto 3inch straight through exhaust, VF34 turbo, and light weight pullies.

I wanted a FMIC since i've gotten bored of the mods i have! :norty: I also read that although the FMIC i have is good for more power than i have, the FMIC will be able to provide better cooling results.

The FMIC will give better cooling but in a trade off in slower spool. Not needed below 380-400hp IMO

The fmic stops you losing power through a warmer charge, it wont "make" you power as such. Ill be sourcing an sti topmount rather than a fmic. I had one on my Cupra years ago and it only kept the car eager cross country where the crap sidemount started suffering heatsoak after a short while.

I'll have an STI topmount for sale shortly ;)

Slower spool is just myth and really you will never see this on road.On RR you will see slower spool,but in real life i've never seen

I've run TD04 like on FMIC or TMIC and difference between the two setups on road has been none

From FMIC you will see generally lower temps,lag you cannot notice(on td04 or vf30-35)if its car mapped properly.

STi TMIC are good for 400bhp(some have 450bhp on TMIC),and for full benefit you will need IC splitter and scoop,i'm afraid.

Not myth, but im not talking 1000 rpms here. There will be some loss in spool due increased distance for the air to travel from turbo to I/L manifold plus the diff. size of the cooler which can lead to increased pressure drop (magnified if the FMIC is of poorer design). Youre also less likely to notice the difference on the road as your concentrating on other things!

But it's good to know that the Sti top mounts are good for 400.

I think you will find the sti tmic will only be good for 400 bhp when you are running with a lot bigger turbo (one rated at 450 bhp ) not one rated at 400 bhp .

So for instance if you ran a md321h with a sti tmic you would not achieve the 400 mark
But if you wer to run a md321t with a sti tmic you would go past the 400 mark ?

Is that what your saying or along those lines

wrx271 take it in the second line you mean FMIC ,LOL. The TMIC will only flow so much air. A larger FMIC will flow better hence the guideline of over 400 bhp going for FMIC as getting to the flow limit of the TMIC.
