how many people have 380 bhp or close on a classic box?
and for how long i got a type r v3 ov with the dccd box running 380 with 360 ft lb and clutch slipped when raised boost so we down a tad and fine . Any time soon im gonna need a clutch or do i start saving 6 speed ? or will i be fine with 380 on my box? its done 60k. cheers rob

im at 352/340 and its eaten a few box's already (classic wrx)

Torque is the killer rather than hp ;)
TX. |
I think Mattyb is running around that sort of power in his using a P1 box but not sure for how long.
I put a six speed dccd box in my type r as i was worried about the 5 speed sh*tting itself. Whats 380/360 like in a classic as i'm hoping to see that or more in mine when run in? |
i have 378bhp 380ftib at 1,7bar on a 5 speed box excide clutch no probs at all for over a year and a half :-) spose it all depends on how you drive i just dont do any launching in 1st and iv had no prob
|
torque is the killer not the bhp,you got thar right....
i got 355bhp an 408 torques in my wrx 2.5 06 5speed |
My motor ran with 360/380 for a fair few years, then was around the 370 for a bit then a very short burst at 429, but I've gone 6 speed now
|
My V3 STI was running 440 BHP on Meth before it blew a head gasket. The box was still OK but slightly noisy, but Iv got a 6 speed to fit when the engine is rebuilt. If driven hard you will kill a 5 speed at 380 or over.

In my experience, the very first time I put my foot to the floor on the accelerator, in third gear after a remap to +330lbft of torque, the gearbox went bang. Those that have boxes lasting at this level are either kidding themselves that they have the power/torque or are extremely lucky.
|
but are all these comments referring to the "strenthened" dccd box?,the 752 dccd box from a type r has stronger/widened 1st,2nd,and 3rd.:wonder:

Just shy of 400/400 here. Been fine for 15k+
No launches. |
The ONLY practical advice the OP can be given in these circumstances is
Can you afford to replace said box if with a 6 speed if it breaks? If not, drive carefully untill you can!! |
As 99greenwagon notes, it isn't just about being a 5 speed, it's about which variant of the 5 speed box you have. And it isn't as simple as TY752 vs. TY754 either, some TY752s are stronger than some TY754s, and some TY752s are completely pants :)
Internet rumour has it that the STi 3/4 type R has stronger 1st/2nd/3rd gears than other TY752s, including 3/4 STi boxes. I'd like to verify this but I've certainly seen people running power through these boxes that would instantly kill an other TY752s, so it at least seems plausible. Ultimately the 6 speed gives you more strength, but there are other cars running more torque than you have through that gearbox. I'm watching them very closely to see what happens! |
Im running 366.1bhp and 380lbft fine so far.

You'll note I carefully stated my comment that there may be truth in it, there may not be, because I work with evidence rather than internet rumour. So at present I cannot say.
People who say things are definitely not true (based on no evidence) are just as bad as those who say things are true (based on no evidence). Both are worthless internet rumours. From someone running circa 360bhp on a classic 5 speed gearbox, looking for 400bhp on a 20% methanol remap later in the year, and expect still to be running the same 5 speed gearbox :thumb: |
