Painting Intercooler Hardpipes??

Hey Chaps,

Just wondering if i need any special paint to be able to spray the intercooler pipes black??

also would it be possible to spray the intercooler or would it have to be powdercoated?

thanks in advance

Hi there

I would recommend get your intercooler pipes powdercoated, will last longer and will not starting to flak after few days/weeks/months.

About the IC core i wouldn't recommend powdercoating,spraying/painting with good Hammerite will do nice and cheap job

Just polish the intercooler with a good metal polish, its not recommended to cover the surface with any form of paint as it can reduce its efficency to dissipate heat.

i thought that it wasnt good to paint an intercooler, but a company called airtec sell powdercoated intercoolers and radiators for fords and theyre painted black.
so i thought it should be ok to have the intercooler painted??

here it is

I wouldn't paint my ic personally heard it reduces ic performance

Depends what paint you use, I've painted my FMIC with radiator paint which is designed to dissipate heat. As for the pipe work I used VHT wrinkle black which gives the same finish as the inlet manifold.

Sprayed my intercooler core black and cold side pipes red then wrapped the hot side.

No issues whatsoever. Just used normal rattle can paint.

A dusting over the core will have little to no effect on efficiency buddy, none that you would notice anyway.

If you're going to paint you need to make sure you use an etch primer to ensure it bonds and prevents it from flaking:thumb:

We leave the intercooler as is, but powder coat the pipes.

An example..

Don't need to prime with the Radiator paint - Powder coating does look good but I prefer the look of mine as I'm not going for a shiny finish on anything under the hood.
I also prefer the look of the black intercooler as I'm going for a more stealthy look - I'm planning to get Black hoses (Silicone) and if possible black anodised clamps.
