I cannot remember the guy that was selling the numberplates...

fitted a tow bar and will be checking later but I think I need a plate with a larger space in the middle to make all the letters readable...

Are you out there Mr Plate maker?

Still here! I'll e-mail the details to you now. Can make the spacing as you like (as long as it's legal http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif )

Far be it for me to suggest you should break the law but, perhaps leaving it how it is would not be unreasonable.

How many people do you think must this not ever occur to after having a towbar fitted?

You never know, may save your bacon (forgive the pun http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif) one day?

True.. Matt

the bike rack I have bought and will be putting on later this week has a plate that bolts on and stays there even when the bike rack is removed which is about 6inches wide and I think might well cover at least two letters... which is cool if I set a camera off but not so good if I get pulled over.
I shall put it on and see..

Is there restrictions on how far from the edge of the plate the letters are allowed to go?

Yes but I don't know what they are. There are restrictions on:

a)the Font
b)the width and height of the digits
c)the "thickness" of the lines that make up the digits
d)the spacing between digits
e)the spacing between the digits and the edge of the plate
f)the material that the backing is made of (the reflectivity is a BS standard)
g)the general "readability" of the plate as a whole (this is where they can catch spacing and different coloured number plate screws type issues!!)

It's quite complex....
