Classic morette advice please chaps

Ok chaps, bought some morette lights this week from a dealer on here. Lights are just as described and arrived very quickly.

But as usual the inner lamps have corroded a bit and the outers are not in perfect condition. I intend to remove the drivers side inner lamp to run a cold air feed but want to replace all the other lamps.
Found these on eBay but they are bloody pricey....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Full-Cryst...#ht_7826wt_689

Really don't want to fork out over £130 for some lamps to be honest when I only paid £100 for the lights to begin with.

Also found these...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-3-4-H4-O...#ht_5045wt_689

Guessing these will fit as the outer lamps and are more reasonably priced.
But i am struggling to find any inner lamps, only need one.

Any ideas please guys ?

Thanks,
Matt.

Well the ones advertised at the high price you quote will put your Morettes back to as new, yet they were over £300 new.
They are also Hella units, so as good as the Cibies they came with, maybe better, the Hellas use H3 bulbs which CAN take uprated bulbs for the inners, the Cibies took H2, which can't...at least, it's not advisable.

Sadly those replacements aren't either Hella or Cibie, and at around £32 each, aren't cheap.

Also, you cannot fit a cold air feed and run on one main beam: you would have to do away with BOTH main beams, (or leave one in place and inoperative), which rather negates the reason for quad lights?

Bite the bullet: get the new light set and you'll be amazed at the peeformance once they are set up. See here: (post 26): https://www.scoobynet.com/technical-...-lamp-kit.html

In all fairness I very rarely use the car at night ( it's more of a Sunday afternoon blast ) so not having great quality bright light isn't a major issue for me.

These lamps will run high and low beam will they not ?

Could I not use these and then just have the near side inner lamp as a low beam ?

MattyB1983 14 March 2012 09:03 PM

Or these for the outers.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3903888199...#ht_5113wt_689

On new morettes are the outers low and high with the inners just high beam ?

alcazar 14 March 2012 10:10 PM

Yes, on Classic Morettes, the outers do high and low beam, they use the standard H4 lamp.

The inners do like driving lights, extra main beam.

So yes, you could get away with just using the outers, but the single remaining inner must be disconnected, or it will fail an MoT and attract attention from plod:(

Can't see why you'd buy quad lights though, then just use two of 'em?

Whatever you do, make sure any replacement lights are E-marked;)

MattyB1983 14 March 2012 11:24 PM

Wanted quad lights as personally think they give a classic a mean look plus I like the idea of using the inner lamp as a cold air feed.

Think I'll buy a pair of new outer lamps and leave the near side inner inoperative.

Thanks for the advice fella.

alcazar 15 March 2012 01:41 PM

Buy DECENT outers, or you WILL be disappointed with the light....and make sure they are E-Marked as the MoT is tighter now......

joey_turbo 15 March 2012 03:37 PM

I have the ebay crystal outers. I'm pretty sure they aren't e-marked. Cheap if you need replacements though.

As you have found, the inners are near impossible to get hold of, but what you are trying to do wont' pass an MOt wil it? I thought you had to have pairs of lights on the front.

MattyB1983 15 March 2012 04:20 PM

It will pass an MOT if both inners are inoperative come test time.

alcazar 15 March 2012 04:23 PM

Failing that, you cut out a circle of black card and place it over the inoperative inner.

THEN it passes;)

No, Im NOT joking.

jef 15 March 2012 05:18 PM

im wanting to do exactly this also mate

but need to source the whole headlight units

how much did you get yours for? some prices ive seen aint pretty.

alcazar 15 March 2012 06:10 PM

He paid £100 or so. My old ones went for £80 when I went projector, and the outers were perfect:(
As was ONE inner.

MattyB1983 15 March 2012 06:28 PM

Yep, paid £100 plus postage.

MattyB1983 15 March 2012 06:29 PM

You can buy them brand new on eBay for £350.

jef 16 March 2012 12:50 AM

anyone got any they are selling at reasonable price?

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 09:44 AM

There is a pair on eBay now. Currently on £51.

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 09:47 AM

If those are mint, so am I.

I can SEE rust on the smaller light on the right.

I did think that also, I have just sent him a question asking just that.

alcazar 16 March 2012 02:04 PM

He'll not get £150 either;)

Bet they don't sell?

He reckons there is a tiny little bit of flaking to the top of one inner lamp but no rust anywhere on any lamps.

prodriverules 16 March 2012 07:43 PM

The silver set look like it has a rusty inner light as well.

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 07:47 PM

It's pretty common by the look of it.

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 07:48 PM

Just makes me laugh that you can buy new outers for circa £30 which rarely need replacing but the inners that always need replacing are £120.

prodriverules 16 March 2012 07:54 PM

Takes the pi55 as you would think given they make more of the inner due to rust they should be less with higher mass production:cuckoo:

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 08:03 PM

You know what it's like, when people want something they always ask more. Same with STI rear lights for instance. You can't give a normal set of rear lights away but a pair of STI ones will make £100 all day long.

mslorach 16 March 2012 08:19 PM

I've got a spare pair of inners lying about somewhere if anyone's interested, they have clear lenses. I'll look them out and get some pics if anyone wants.

MattyB1983 16 March 2012 08:26 PM

I'll take them if they are not rusted.

Price ???

But that's because the originals were made by Cibie, specifically for Morette quad lights.

Once the lights stopped selling, Cibie stopped production.
Now they are like hen's teeth.
