One of the family cars has just failed to start - battery.

My question is what neutralises battery acid?? it has eaten a hole under the battery and through into the drivers footwell - need to neutralise it NOW - Bicarb of Soda??

Any chemists out there?? how do I treat the metal left after??

Pete

AndyC_772 02 May 2002 05:41 PM

Bicarbonate of soda will work, yes. When it stops fizzing, flush with plenty of water. You don't want there to be a few drops of acid hiding in the corners!

Just use as much water as poss, trying to neutralise means using something alcaline which could also cause damage, I think.

vfg 02 May 2002 05:42 PM

The best method by far is to dilute the acid with as much water as possible. Bicarb will help but put on too much and fail to wash of the bicarb and you will replace corrosion problem A with corrosion problem B!

Good luck

PS I was a chemist many years ago and have 2 degrees in the subject.

Ray_li 02 May 2002 05:42 PM

water it down by water or find out the ph of the acid then add alkaline to balance it.

battery acid good for making bodies dissappear. ;)

Neil Smalley 02 May 2002 05:44 PM

Bicarb will do it, but you need a lot of it.

Don't use bleach, although it will neutralise the Acid it may well release Chlorine gas, which you DO not want to breathe in.

Loads of Bicarb, then loads of water.

Neil

There are one or two people on here that may wish him to do just that :D

Pete, remember that little boy who cried Wolf? Good job there are some magnanimous souls here.

MichelleWRX1994 02 May 2002 06:06 PM

My advice to you is unless you know the concentrations of substances you are dealing with:

USE WATER!!!

Flush several times, you can't use enough. Use Bicarb aswell, but mainly flush with water.

If you try to be clever and use an alkaline you may swing things the other way and cause more damage.

Neil Smalley 02 May 2002 06:14 PM

Gold wheel paint will neutralise the acid, fix any holes it may have made and clean up afterwards.

Shame you have'nt got any :D

pslewis 02 May 2002 06:32 PM

Thanks all - I think I will go the Gold Paint route .... the more I use up the less for tarty wheels ;)

Honest thanks all - I know I cry wolf but do you know what I thought when I saw what had happened?? ASK SCOOBYNET!!!! funny eh??

I have now rinsed it all down and watered in well - Red Oxide where its bare metal?? maybe?? what do you reckon?

You seriously wouldnt want me to gas myself would you?? :(

:D Pete :D

Dr Lurve 02 May 2002 06:34 PM

loads of water, but be careful, adding water to acid will make it fizz, hiss and spit loads, wear safety specs and protective clothing and wash splashes immediately.

Pete,

On your salary I would employ a team of Amazonian rainforest maidens to import and wash down your problem area with the purest Amazonian rainforest water......

Pete, Wash it down with loads of soapy water. soap is an alkaline, the opposite of the acid presently eating away your car. this will neutrialise (if I could spell it) the acid.
Or you could just talk to the acid for approx 15 minutes. After that it will vacate the car of its own free will after you have irritated the living p1ss out of it.
:D;)

Katana 02 May 2002 08:13 PM

If the car had gold alloys, this would never have happened. ;)

Scooby Dooby Blue 02 May 2002 10:33 PM

I hope you're buying a new Subaru battery and not upgrading to a more resiliant brand.
I'd hate for you to inadvertantly join the modified Scoob posse :D
