CLUNK/KNOCK noise from front when braking. ONLY when car is going forward.
 

Hi Guys. As per title. Knock/clunk noise from front (wheels area) when braking. ONLY when going forward and pressing brake pedal. When braking on reverse NO noise at all. Basically, especially at low speeds like parking, once I touch the brake pedal you can hear that noise and it's much louder on full left lock. It sounds like you'll take a hammer and hit something metal.*
Yesterday I took the wheels off and look for loose pads or caliper bolts but everything is OK apart from... Passenger side steering rack boot which is broken. Seeing this I've decided to check track rod ends and I found that they're *****ed. These ball joints are really LOOSE and grease is coming out of them. You can move and rotate these using one finger really.*

Question: Could these make such a noise ???

Could just be the front pads moving.

Completely rebuild 4 pot calipers, new discs and pads installed around 400 miles ago. Could worn out ball joints and track rod ends make such a noise ?

It ONLY does make this noise when braking forward. So if there was something wrong with pads, It should be making that sound when braking on reverse as well in my opinion.

The pads can still move though, it's no big deal.

A single CLUNK/KNOCK noise once you touch the brake pedal.

My pads click, but only when I first move forward.

By your same logic, if it were ball joints, they would knock going backwards too.

And it's much louder on left full lock so I'm guessing it's more suspension issue than brakes.

If this is your symptom, then it's highly likely it's the pads moving... this is exactly what I get.

The other thing could be front ARB bushes... try driving slowly down a pot holed road and see if the sound is there.

I might be wrong but I think when you're braking forward, all cars weight is going on front of the car and opposite when you're braking on reverse. So different forces works on front suspension I think.

I've got this sound recorded so I'll try to put it on YouTube. Maybe that will help to identify it.

This sound is defo MUCH louder on full lock so if it were pads there should be no difference in sound volume I think.

Ball joints are an £11 part - sounds like they need changing anyway and it's what you seem to want to blame it on so just change them and see how it is afterwards.

Ok. Track rod ends changed and... STILL ****ing same :-(

i had this problem with mine when i replaced pads took it back to the garage and the calipers had corroded which ment the pads moved about, easy way to check is wobble the pads and it will probably make the noise you are describing like mine did, we done a quick fix but the noise has return so its back in tomorrow as it looks like im going to have to have new calipers and its now a lot worse as it does it even when driving along and im now getting a metal on metal sound too :( which is a bit worrying as they are brand new pads yours could also be that the pads are not the right one's for your car.

Cheers mate. I'll have a look today. I doubt if the calipers corroded 'cause I completely stripped them down and paint them using Hammerite. A few weeks after they started making that noise. I've got some old pads that came with calipers so will put them on and see what happens.

For all of you guys that were saying that pads are the issue, BIG Well Done and Thank You ! You were right ! So, I've changed the pads and everything is OK, with no funny sounds at all :-) Doing this I found that one of the pins is damaged a bit. I'm nearly sure that this was making that knocking sound. What do you guys think ?

What is this exactly? My car is Do I g the same thing and its driving me insane. I've already replaced brake caliper and tie rod ends with no luck. What is the rod picture you posted?

Hi mate. Each caliper has 2 of those pins. They're going through the caliper and brake pads. On mine one, one of the pins had a little groove so pads weren't sliding freely which was causing a knock sound every time I was pressing brake pedal. Once I replaced them with new ones problem was gone. Hope it helps.

FYI, assuming the Subaru 4 pots..

The fix is probably re-inserting the metal spring clip the correct way round. This is designed to push the pads in the carrier such that they don't move and clunk when the brakes are applied when the wheel is going forwards. However when braking in reverse you get the little clunk as the pads move down against the spring to the bottom of the carrier.
