FMIC or TMIC ?
Im intrigued by a FMIC. Do you need a remap after fitting one ? My main worry is that yeah it gives better cooling, but that the charged air has got a long way to travel from the turbo to the inlet manifold ! Do FMIC set ups suffer from lag or delay in power etc ?

you will need it mapped....... you wont need a fmic until you reach a certain bhp perhaps.
what is your car now? what are you planning for it ? |
Its a prodrive which has been mapped again. I dont know the bhp, dont have any print outs. Prodrive is 265bhp , so i dont know how much more bhp it has. Car was mapped on Shell V power and doesnt run right on anything less. It has a K & N panel filter and manual boost controller set around 1.2 bar. 300bhp would be nice.

FMIC is known to be more efficient. It keeps the charge cooler & is safer,but remap is needed. Some have run over 400 BHP on a TPIC, but it can be risky as at speed aero dynamics dictate that little air actualy goes into your bonnet scoop so your top mount gets the least cooling when it needs the most. Lag is slightly increased but your mapper can make the best of this & the extra cooling gives a gain in power too. Do a search on it you could spend hours reading up on it.

You wont notice the lag difference once mapped and the extra bhp & torque makes up for it |
if you want 300bhp you will have to change the turbo, possibily the injectors and a decat or sports cat exhaust

LOL, scobynet myth strikes again.
A car setup correctly with a front mount won't see any noticable lag increase, its a myth caused by lack of knowledge and poor setups on cars. While you can calculate a fraction of time in lag increase you will never notice it in real life unless there are other compounding issues. I can never figure out why that site states what it does, seems to go against every other tuner/mapper out there with what it says, read into that what you will. basicly once you hit 300bhp you will start to see a better result from a front mount |
not worth adding a front mount unless you upgrade the standard turbo i'd have thought

stay with a tmic until you are thinking of over 400 bhp as the sti tmic does its job up to 400 bhp and the wrx does for up to 300 bhp

If you do upgrade your turbo, you may not need a fmic in the 300s but you will get more bhp if you have one.

Thanks for the input lads. Which turbo is my next stage up ? Is it a bolt on part with the same flanges and oil and water connector locations ? Also im guessing i would need a remap too with the new turbo.

Mine had the prodrive performance pack fitted from new. It is on the original bill of sale. It was around 1800 quid. I will find the bill and see if it itemises things. It has the prodrive exhaust and silicone prodrive intercooler hose and is alot faster than a standard Subaru. I test drove 2 bugeye turbo,s not prodrives before i bought this and to be honest, i was disappointed and nearly opted for a BMW 3 series M tech. Since it has been remapped before my ownership the car i cant comment on bhp or what settings etc, all i know is it is maybe everything on max, it is a bit twitchy highly strung and very eager to go above 3000 rpm and it has been mapped on 99 fuel, and doesnt drive well under load on 97 fuel.

see , mine is a 02 WRX STI type UK Prodrive , and its 265bhp. If it had have had the PPP fitted , it would be 300bhp (and i wouldnt have made a dic of myself after telling everyone i had 300 horsies)
So what is yours ? A pre 02 WRX STI ? what are they before PPP ? |
Mine is a 52 plate WRX with prodrive performance pack. Standard WRX were 215 bhp i think.

ah , dead on. Though from what i hear , for the cost of the PPP it wasnt worth what it gained ! Good luck with the tuning.

wrx ppp is different to sti ppp. Wrx is silicone intercooler hose, backbox and ecu chip to around 265bhp. Sti is the dame but with 2nd decat pipe as well i think to 300bhp. The standard wrx turbo is a td04 which will top out around 280bhp with correct supporting mods.

ppp will still have standard turbo, and thats 5k worth of extras :o

I was fine to 400bhp with my STi TMIC but needed my FMIC to achieve 450bhp.

The FMIC eliminates the heat soak , it's much better if you track a car as well, keeps the temperatures cooler. Tested and proved.... Thought the myth about the lag is untrue unfortunately, i was very sceptic as well when people on here were stating that. After fitting FMIC on my classic i definately felt a bit more lag, but hey. When you floor it, the revs dont go lower than 3.5k rpm when changing gear so it's fine.

Surely a fmic is always gonna give you lower intake temps regardless of your horsepower meaning you will able to get more horses out of it?
