Broken Down :( , advice please.
 

Morning Guys!

I have an 02 WRX, had the car since Sept. last year and since I've owned it it seems to have drunk alot of oil about a litre and a half to two every month. There has been a bit of smoke on it when been driving but not much and none on startup.

Anyway, I was driving up to Nottingham at the weekend from Luton when the car suddenly felt like it was struggling (I was doing bout 70ish) and then the exhaust started to kick out lots of blue-ish smoke, it was also coming from underneath the bonnet.

The car still starts but doesn't run well and sort of 'pops' from the exhaust,
a quick search on here leads me to believe the turbo has gone, would people agree with this analysis? If that is the case can you answer me these quick quesitons?

Which turbo do I need as a direct replacement? I think (from research) it's a TD04? is that correct?

I would like to get the car a bit more powerful in the furture (Not crazy figures anywhere from 260hp onwards no more then 300hp from looking on here it looks like a injectors, panel filter, de-cat, fuel pump & re-map) to get
these figures would you advise a different turbo? if so which one?

Where can I buy a new turbo from? (hopefully as quick as possible to I'd like to get her back on the road at the weekend, latest)

I would get the exhaust off and have a physical check of the turbo (I can't confirm what checks you would need to do other than the obvious play in the turbo vanes)

You could have two seperate problems (oil / blue smoke - rocker cover? Valve seals?) (lack of power - misfire , coilpacks?)

Just an idea, I am not mechanically qualified just throwing a few ideas out there - I may be totally wrong !

I'm in the process of taking it all apart now, should have the turbo off tonight to inspect.

I checked the rocker cover after reading about it on here there are no leaks from it. Had the sparks out yesterday, they all seem to be fine tho i didn't check if they were firing properly, also should mention there was some oil in the intercooler, If thats at all relevant?

if the coil packs failed the ecu light would come on, a litre and a half is a lot of oil to be using so something is very wrong.
i would get it checked by a specialist and if the turbo has failed, try and source a second hand one on here.

Had no lights come on on the dash or anything, I took it to a Subaru Dealer and they basically said that if it was pulling fine and there were no bad noises coming from it and it wasn't smoking then I didn't need to worry :/ they did have a quick look but couldn't see/hear anything immediate.

The car did pull fine prior to this happening and never had any issues with it (other then the high oil consumption)

I will get a second hand turbo if I have to though I'd rather get a new one first if possible as I don't want to have to do this job again in another few months.

Get yours rebuilt as a spare once you have fitted the secondhand one.

You would be very unlucky to have a second hand turbo only last you a couple of months they should last years and years.

Perhaps you should take your car to a specialist rather than a dealer because where is all your oil going?

I assumed that as the turbo was possibly on it's way out thats where I was loosing it? could that not be the case then?

That's good to know at £1000 for a new one a second hand one is the more likely option at the moment, do you know where I can get it re-built?

if your not sure of the fault fella you could be wasting your money on unneeded parts.
get it looked at by a specialist, diagnose the fault then buy either new or used parts and repair.
guessing the problem will only cost money and heartache.
it does sound like a turbo fault but its impossible to diagnose on a forum.

I just sold my td04 for £70 so second hand is a lot cheaper but as tubby has said you need to find out what the problem is before you go shopping.

OK thats a fair comment I appreciate that it'll be difficult to diagnose just by talking about it and that sounds like a good call to be honest.... Problem is I don't know any :(, so..........Does anyone know of a specialist in the Luton/Bedfordshire Area?!? :confused:

O.k. It would appear that it is the turbo that has gone so I need to get a new one.... I'm thinking of upgrading to a vf34 or 35 however will I need all the other supporting stuff to be fitted at the same time to be able to run it or can i bolt that on now and add the injectors, fuel pump, re-map at a later date??

If you will go upgrading your existing car,just don't forget after fitting all mentioned parts you will need straight away remap,because you will end as few people with damaged engine.

VF34 or VF35 are great turbos,you will need STi pink injectors,Walbro or HRC Fuel pump,3-port boost solenoid and STi TMIC and remap

It would need mapping straight away for the new turbo. the other bits could be added later with a map tweek at the same time.

Hi Just drop us a line if you need any fuel advice or a good value pump. All HRC pumps have a 2 year no quibble warranty. Avilable in 255lph, 290 lph and 340 lph. Soon adding a 310 lph to range that will be only a couple of quid over the 290 price to Scoobynet members :)

WRT 2 year warranty, can I return an incorrect pump that hasn't been fitted to get one to fit a 99-00 classic? (apols for the hi-jack)
