VF28 - Good for 310/320?

Was initially looking for a VF34/5 but may have the option to buy a VF28 at a good price. My plans are to aim for 320bhp max but would be happy around 310bhp. Will this turbo be suitable with all supporting mods or am I better off waiting for a VF34/5?

Also, how do they spool compared to the TD04 and VF34/5?

VF28 will spool faster than 34/35 and will be good to 320 with a good setup.
I have an identical vf24 about to go on though I am running std injectors at the moment, I am doing mine via OS though so cna chop and change as and when needed software wise.

I am running a VF28 with Stage 1 Remap at just under 300 and everything seems to run hunky dory so I can only imagine with the right mods to back it up should be good for 320.

My supporting mods will be:

Pink Injectors
HRC 255 fuel pump
Decat harvey uppipe
STI Sportscat downpipe
Decat centre section +prodrive backbox
STI I/C + tray
3 port boost solenoid

I have uk turbo with

VF28 (wrapped)
Ported & wrapped headers
Harvey Smith spec Up pipe
Decat down pipe
HKS Exhaust
Standard filter
Remap
STi 8 intercooler & modded under tray.
Silicon hoses
Uprated fuel pump
Helix clutch / flywheel

Makes 328bhp / 325ft/Ib torque on Dyno Dynamics at 1.2ish bar on the dyno and about 1.3 on the road, so very safe.

Am still on standard 440's and running like this for 14months now.

So yes mate 320 is very realistic.

My turbo spools very slightly later that TD04 but by 3300rpm the VF is pulling away.
I get 1.3 bar on the road in 5th gear at 3000rpm. When I compared the graphs the TDO4 was only pulling harder up to bout 3300. From there on the car has 45bhp more st same rpm and about 30 more torque. My TD04 was running 283 / 298 on same mods except on standard intercooler. So is a fair comparison for the VF in terms of performance gain. The car pulls so much more and for longer, however I think 34/35 would give more push in the back and if I was doing it again I probably wait for this one, however the 28 is dame good and to be honest on the 5 speed box is a safer bet.

:thumb: Awesome, exactly the responses I was hoping, happy with my purchase now.

VF28

Hi mate my V5 STI made 335 with a VF28, Walbro fp, full decat, FMIC and an induction kit. Was mapped by JGM. It originally made 327 with the standard STI top mount intercooler. Spools up well, Enjoy. Been running this for over 2 years so safe too.

My V6 STi with a 28 made 305 with just a decat and panel filter.........I asked for it to be mapped to be safe rather than for the power.

snake1906 01 March 2012 06:37 PM

my 28 made 329 on pump fuel and 360 on meth

sandyRS16i 01 March 2012 08:53 PM

I made 320bhp on mine. No boost until 3000rpm, 18psi at 3500rpm makes a great looking graph. That was decat, newage TMIC and APS CAIK.

+1 for the above :thumb:,so expect decent figures it can also depend on the condition of the engine imho,as my 99 car made 317bhp,but it had done 135k with fsh. .I put the same ecu and mods on my 00 car and remap with 82k & fsh and it produced this:

VF28
std headers
std Up pipe
Decat down pipe(heat wrapped)
Afterburner vortex Exhaust
K& N filter
Map tweak to ecu,by bob rawle
STi6 intercooler & zero sports air splitter.
Silicon radiator top hose
Walbro fuel pump
Std clutch
Samco induction hose
3 port boost solenoid

Makes 330bhp / 326 lb/ft @ 1.35 on the road, with boost starting at 2800 rpm. :thumb:

Got an old vf28 bolted on my 2.5 at the moment. All mods to handle in excess of 500 bhp when I get my new turbo fitted and mapped. 28 is pushing 370 bhp and 440 odd ft/lb torque. Spools from nothing on the 2.5. Great mid range punch, but does start slowing at much over 5.5k. This is running v-power and 10% methanol.

Patsy450 01 March 2012 11:34 PM

Forgot to say. I also ran the same vf28 on a 02 WRX. Basic mods being, decat from uppipe back, sports panel filter, upgraded plugs and fuel pump. Made something like 318 bhp and 330 ft/lbs torque on that 2.0. Standard injectors were maxed out at that.
