Twin scroll turbo upgrade MD321 billet or SC42 billet or LM420 billet?

Hi people I have a JDM STI and want to upgrade the turbo but keep the std sti tmic with other supporting mods and hopefully make 400bhp maybe near 410bhp. Does anyone have some info on what turbo is better, spools up quick and gives good power levels these are the options MD321 billet, SC42 billet and LM420 billet? Any other info or suggestions welcome.
Cheers.

What power are you running at the moment?

Tony:)

Tazz01WRX 03 February 2012 11:00 PM

360bhp

rickya 03 February 2012 11:02 PM

Better to just go for LM450 or SC46 and aim for 450bhp.

Tazz01WRX 03 February 2012 11:11 PM

But then I'd have to get a fmic. I want to keep the std sti tmic setup.

rickya 03 February 2012 11:14 PM

Just go FMIC, induction kit, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, remap and be done with it! No point going from 360bhp to 390 bhp. E.g.

jura11 03 February 2012 11:21 PM

MDX321T and LM420 using same turbine wheel and in some aspects are same, but MDX321T is more than 450bhp turbo with supported mods

No one has done a back to back on the same car afaik, so I doubt you will get anything other than a subjective view.

From personal experience I can say the LM400 Billet will do 400bhp on the OEM JDM engine, tmic, turbo inlet pipe and airbox.

Injectors, exhaust, turbo, panel filter, remap and off you go for a potential 400bhp. Very cost effective upgrade.

I've got an SC42 Twinscroll 405bhp/385ltb however it was done on a brand new car so might be a little more now she's bed in a little better. I might be selling mine if your interested :)

Hi rick, totally know what you are saying but I've already got all the other supporting mods like injectors, fuel pump, sfs intake hose. So buying just the turbo would be about £2k as I didnt want more lag and less response and getting a good fmic is an extra £1K. What fmic you think would not increase lag and still have same kind of response of a tmic?

No i've not seen any graph on Twin scroll MDX321T,on our has made single scroll MDX321T 490bhp with 20% methanol

About the intercooler, you can buy easily Japspeed or HDi GT2 which are proven, mainly don't increase so much lag and don't cost so much against Perrin,APS or others

Here is MDX321T on our 2.1

Ya I guess you right about the back to back testing on each turbo. I should have maybe asked people for dyno print outs of those turbos with supporting mods or which ones are averaging the highest power and earliest spool up/boost? but also it wouldnt be on the same car. I guess it was worth a try.
Hows the drivability of your car going with the fmic? You ever thought of running a meth mix to see how more power you could get?

Immy is the SC42 you have a billet unit or non-billet? also have you got any pics and full spec of the car?

Looks great but I'm only running a standard jdm sti 2.0lt block so dont think it'll make that power on mine but still good.

The fmic is looking like a good idea but I'll also have to buy an induction kit which is another £150 or £200 and maybe get bigger injectors to like 800cc so £480 +vat fmic £400 still about £1k so not sure how far I should go?

What an uprated tmic (like hyperflow tmic) or do they get alot of heat soak or are they not as good as std sti tmic? any info?

leeroywrx 04 February 2012 06:43 AM

Without doubt the sc42.the single scroll version on my mates classic with jdm newage bottom end is 500 bhp :)

MartynJ 04 February 2012 07:21 AM

Having sold a vast amount of SC turbo's over the last year or so, I can't tell how happy we are with them.
The SC42 single scroll is an awesome little turbo, so I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy a twin scroll version should I require one for a customer.

Shaun 04 February 2012 09:18 AM

As posts above Tazz.... everything is subjective from individuals opinions. ;)

Back to back is the only way to compare properly objectively.

They're all pretty much the same in reality.

If you start looking into the detail you may get even more confused. :D

The LM & MDX turbos (twin-entry) share the same exhaust housing. They both share the same manufacturer as in Turbo Dynamics.

The SC turbos are made by Blouch.

The LM and MDX can be single scroll or twin-entry.

The SC can be single scroll or twin scroll.

I have seen no evidence so far, to suggest that the either the LM/MDX twin-entry is any better or worse than a SC twin scroll.

The LM and MDX come with Zicotec coating on the exhaust housing and are made from extremely high quality iron.

I suspect you won't go wrong with any choice.

Driveability with my Hybrid GT2 FMIC is 100% fine mate. That FMIC was under £400 as well remember.

I nearly went the Meth route a couple of weeks back..... but decided it would only be to chase figures and is an utter pain in the arse to me, to do all this carrying meth around and measuring this and that. I might come back to it in the future though when I stop being so grumpy.

I would suspect mine would make circa 490bhp on meth, allowing for the 10% increase factor using 20% meth.

Matthew_JDM 04 February 2012 11:15 AM

Im glad someone posted this up as I was going to ask same question. I'm contemplating the md321 or sc42. Why not buy the Japspeed FMIC in the group buy deal £229?

Maz 04 February 2012 12:49 PM

SC42 twin scroll with supporting mods and mapped for meth 435bhp at 1.45 bar.

Mines a billet version and the car is a JDM hatch spec c with 3" tb exhaust hks mushroom filter and remap running 405bhp/380ltb.

Perhaps if Ian would lend me a turbo I could try it out and we can compare results. Might give him a tinkle and see what he says.

I am not sure what I would replace my turbo with but I really feel like trying the Borg Warner full race peak torque below 4000rpm thats just crazy.

Shaun 04 February 2012 03:38 PM

Immy,
Well according to the other results for your turbo, your current set-up is well under performing! Why don't you get the set-up sorted to suit and get the best out of what your turbo is supposed to be capable of...... surely that's better than changing turbos.

Under performing compared to which results who's got a similar set to me?
Everyone else is using meth hence them having higher figures than me. ;)

Shaun 04 February 2012 05:43 PM

Immy,
Sorry, I thought others had acheived 420-430 on VPower with Newage engines.

Einstein,
Why you only running 1.45bar..... crank the boost up and ditch the meth!

What supporting mods, Injectors, FMIC, Induction kit?

Ive been thinking of getting one for a while but dont want to go down the FMIC, CAIK route, I want to keep it looking as standard as possible but also get the best result from the turbo, Which is why i still havn`t bought one yet :lol1:

Already have 358/357 so its a lot to cough up for another 40-60 bhp. Decisions decisions.....

Anders_WR1 04 February 2012 07:06 PM

I'd go for more than 400bhp, you'll soon be bored with a 40bhp step up in power. These cars come alive with 450bhp+ IMO.

Shaun, I've been away from the forum for a while - when did you jump on the FMIC bandwagon!?

Anders

Shaun 04 February 2012 08:04 PM

A few months ago mate.... Took the move (with induction changes) to unleash the potential of the LM450.

GAZ,
Thats the same thing I wanted but everyone keeps telling me to go for a fmic

Tazz01WRX 04 February 2012 08:15 PM

Shaun,
What fmic are you running and where did you get it from?
Also what bhp did you get from the LM450 billet?

Tazz01WRX 04 February 2012 08:20 PM

Shaun just seen your pervious post, but where did you buy your fmic from?
