Who has a terabit backbone then?

Ahh, I misunderstood, you mean disk size in terabytes; nobody has a terabit backbone :)

Some bulletin boards come with this feature, and have search and other facilities missing from Scoobynet. This one

http://192.216.217.59/index.php?s=c0...3ccf11945a93fa

remembers your last login even if it was from a different machine.

There is a lot of good BBS software out there that can add numerous features e.g. stopping the same email address being used for multiple user names. Now that might take out a few of the unwanted posters.

Just my 2p worth.

:)

How often do you need/want to post something on the net for the benefit of other scoobynet members like photos, custom apps, movie clips, etc?

It'd be great if scoobynet could offer an amount of space (in total, not per person) for established members (either by length of time served or moderator approval) who could upload bits n bobs via a scoobynet web page (like source code/image uploaders).

If you're not approved you wouldn't get to see the upload page in the first place.

It'd need a couple of moderators to filter the copyright/distasteful/"not on scoobynet thanks" stuff.

A good number of us spend the day on here, so 4 or 5 empowered people could successfully moderate over the length of a day.

Is this a silly idea?

David_Wallis 01 May 2002 02:03 PM

good idea... Unsure of the spec of the server / server that scoobynet runs on but could a reasonable sized hard disk / disks depending on raid level be purchased so that we can upload small videos and images... as the code for uploading images is simple (as you all know!)..

Or are there other issues with this?

I'd appreciate Simon's feedback on this as the initial workload would be his, even if he farmed off the page loader function.

Let's face it half a gig would be enough space and it doesn't long to remove the old stuff.

David_Wallis 01 May 2002 02:31 PM

I cant believe Im about to suggest IDE...

I can't believe no one has an opinion on this

David_Wallis 02 May 2002 08:37 AM

must be just us then... is there anywhere you can get free webspace (lots) and ASP support on the net??

David

Fosters 02 May 2002 09:02 AM

can you still get freedrive accounts? they were only 50megs tho'

DJ Dunk 02 May 2002 09:14 AM

Should be easy enough to set up. Free webspace is available everywhere, just needs someone (;)) to write a nice little java app or something to upload with ;)

Would it be possible to sign up for loads of free space with various providers with the app checking for available space and allocating accordingly ?

Fosters 02 May 2002 09:23 AM

Not quite as on your doorstep as scoobynet though... if Simon was kind enough... ;)

David_Wallis 02 May 2002 09:32 AM

I could write an uploader... in fact im sure I have one somewhere as will many others on here...

Checking for space on servers.. thats the sort of Idea I was thinking off.. but you would have to get the server to ftp the files elsewhere...

DAVE26 02 May 2002 09:49 AM

i dont mind giving some space on my ftp if ya wanna upload movies n things ???

but in general its a good idea :)

if you wanna use the space just let me know and ill seup an accout to use it :)

netclectic2 02 May 2002 02:14 PM

i dont think web space is the real problem. it's more likely to be bandwith. half a gig of content being uploaded / downloaded all day every day quickly mounts up.

you're unlikely to find any host that will allow you that amount of bandwidth without a rather high price tag!

:(

DAVE26 03 May 2002 10:23 AM

my mate has a 1gig server :)

David_Wallis 03 May 2002 10:36 AM

we need more like a 1gig backbone... 1gig is tiny for a server!

We have some co-located that are terrabytes..

Nimbus 03 May 2002 11:07 AM

Good idea! I've got a couple of movies of my car and a few other bit I could share. Can not help with setting this up, but you have my support :D

chiark 03 May 2002 01:44 PM

Bandwidth is the massive problem. Theoretically, I could set this up due to me having a reseller account with fasthosts, but in reality I think it would get pulled fairly quickly. Might be worth a try tho. Give me a moment or two...

David_Wallis 03 May 2002 03:56 PM

sorry my grammar is bad very poor.. i carnt spel eevr

super_si 04 May 2002 11:56 AM

Generally speaking its only us "computer geeks" that need to shre files, with each other problem solving etc........
