Gearbox whining noise 2005 sti type uk v9

Hi all

Just a quick question regarding my gearbox, is the whining normal coming from my gearbox???? and it seems to get a little noisier after driving it hard???

Thanks

Have you checked the box oil?

wrx9181 27 January 2012 06:15 PM

Never had any noise from mine budd

Mine has a bit of a drone when in a highish gear and low load. One dealer and one specialist both said nothing to worry about. All fluids in gearbox and diff was ok.

Thanks guys. How/where do I check the gearbox level?

Thanks

on the o/s of the intercooler between the clutch fluid reservoir and cooler there is a dip stick. Its pretty low down almost under the intercooler

Cheers il check that tomorrow. If its low any recommendations on oil? Thanks

Ive got castral syntrax in mine. Think theyve renamed it now. Seems to work well though. It has to be filled via the dipstick hole to. Which is a pain. So if it needs oil id advise buying some pipe to stick in the hole and a funnel to put in the other end of the pipe.

Ok cheers will check tomoz. It was serviced at 49000 miles by Subaru which was the cambelt service just abit strange why it whines. It sounds like my friends lotus but not as loud. I don't suppose the previous owner but a upgraded gearbox. Il investigate. Thanks

You sure its the gearbox and not the diff whining??

jon1984 27 January 2012 09:35 PM

It could be. Can you check the levels on the diff?? Could it b because my diff lock is on auto???

mervil 27 January 2012 09:57 PM

It's the DCCD box, what setting is the centre diff on?

jon1984 27 January 2012 10:22 PM

Just on auto that's all it says. Orange light saying auto. Could the whining be due to this setting? Cheers
