tho not an STI, there is often discussion about the rear seat bar in the RB5 being a brace

You don't just get those in RB5's.:) I have the same in my 95 WRX.:) It's not a strut bar as far as I am concerned. More a restaint to prevent intrusion into the cabin from projectiles in the boot in event of accident? :) Also strengthens the rear seat from bending sagging.
