Oil choice, STI Type-R
 

Good morning flat-four friends.

I have searched throught the threads but have been getting very confused with the different type of oils availble for my '99 Type-r.

It is used as a daily driver but as with all subarus, gets used as it should be given an open stretch of country road.

I dont stretch the revs too much, as the boost tends to peak off before redline anyway, perhaps change at 6,500 / 7,000 tops when using the fun pedal.

Am I looking at fully/part/synthetic oil?

Also, any recommendations on places to go for the oil, as I avoid Halfords and the likes at all costs?!

Any advice would be appreciated, I know this has been asked before, I am just struggling to wade through the current threads for my idea grade!

A decent 5w40 or 10w40 fully synthetic will be fine :) Something like millers

Many thanks Tony and Banny, 5w40 fully synthetic appears to be the obvious option.

One final thing... if the previous owner has been using semi/part and I top up with fully, will this cause a problem? I am not sure what he has been using and dont want to cause a problem! Mind you, prob due and oil change anyway...

Best not to mix oils unless an emergency,change it ASAP & buy more than you need so you have some for top up .

Yes, a 5w-40 is ideal

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

It's absolutely fine to mix normal oil, the only problem is diluting the quality of the better oil.

For a 1996 Type R, yes, a 75w-90 is correct.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5/Sintopoid, Motul Gear 300, Millers CRX NT , Gulf Competition and Redline GL5 are ideal for the diff.
