sending email from a smart Phone, problem, can you help?

I've got the Samsung ACE smart phone.

I set up my email address on it so I can read my emails that I normally just read on my laptop... winner :) This I have no problem with.

BUT
I can't seem to send or reply to emails from the phone.

I've followed the set up information and used the same setting that are on my OutLook express.. for account names/PORT/ pop3 etc etc.

I know it works to the point I get my emails from the server (I don't delete the emails if they get sent to the phone, only when on the main Computer), if I change settings/PORT numbers it won't let me set up the email account on my phone. So in my eyes the eail account on the phone must be correct.

When I go to send the emails 'hold' in the outbox, when I press send for outbox messages, they try to send then a CONNECTION ERROR message comes up.

The only email I can get it to send is an email back to the same email account.

eg: my email set up is for my home EMAIL address, I can send an email from it, back to the same Email.
does that make sence?

Any one got any points for me?

hutton_d 18 January 2012 09:37 AM

What you've said doesn't really make sense ... :wonder: To me anyaway.

I've also got a POP email address and do what you do. But if I have to set my phone email up from scratch I just copy the settings I have in Outlook. If you have email that won't send it sounds like you have a security setting wrong. You do have it set the same as OL don't you?

Yes. Did all the account setting the same s my outlook express.

What email server are you using to send the mail? Some don't allow relaying through them if the network in use isn't their own or an agreed one and others require additional authentication.

Check to see if the equivalent settings between the PC and the phone match for the 'outgoing server requires authentication' setting... sometimes a simple tickbox can be missed.

Also if you are sending mail on port 25 some ISPs snaffle traffic to that port and redirect it to their own mail servers, try port 587 instead as that is the usual alternate port although it may not be enabled.

Ignore this last bit if you are using SSL to send mail.

I have the same problem. I have a HTC Desire on Orange. Ive sent up my phone to recieve my `main` email which is currently demon. When Im at home, via the wireless in my house, I can recieve all new emails and reply. However, if I go out, I can still recieve emails via orange internet, but if I try to reply then the email doesnt go through.

Searching around I discovered that obviously demon only allows email to be sent via devices connected to its own network, i.e. when at home, over my wireless via demon. So, I changed the outgoing settings within my email account id/servers on the phone to use orange.co.uk 's post server, but that didnt work either.

So, can anyone suggest a generic server / address I can use to send email out, whilst using my HTC desire on the orange network ??

Take this opportunity to get rid of ISP specific email addresses.

Go with Gmail, you can get Gmail to pick up mail to your old email address and even send as if from that address.

The second poster with a problem did and I'd say there was a fair chance that by following my advice the OP would be better off as well.

But going to gmail wouldn't solve their immediate problem!

Why not? It's very simple to set up Gmail so that it picks up other POP mail for you and you can send as if from that account. And if Gmail doesn't work on Android then there's no hope.

Hey, I too have an 'isp independent' address so I'm not disagreeing with Jack here. Just that the OP has a problem communicating with 'a' server. No matter what email address he has, and who provides it, he'll have to enter 'email/server stuff' into his settings. 'Go and sort out a complete new email address' is not an answer to his phone not sending emails!

It may help if SK tells us who his provider is, that way we may be able to offer some more "focused" help ....

my email address is the one given to me by the guys who set my website up info@neoquip.com

I have a Gmail account on the phone as I needed that to set up the Samsung when I bought it, as the gmail account links to the google settings.

as said, my info@neoquip.com email address, i getthe emails on the phone, but if i want to reply or send an email from this account it won't ally me to send. Connection Error come sup.
I can however send an email from info@neoquip.com to info@neoquip.com, that emails comes back though to me on the phone fine.

I use Gmail also have hotmail forwarding onto my gmail account. Everything works fine and is easy to setup. All my emails are in sync no matter what device I check them on. Also using android all my contacts calendar is backed up and synced. Lose you phone, get new phone, sign into Google everything is synced onto phone. :)

salsa-king 18 January 2012 03:41 PM

how do I know if I'm all sync'd up?

andy97 18 January 2012 03:53 PM

Easiest way, just use Gmail. Email all your contacts saying that this will be your only email address. Its only like telling everyone you have changed your Tel no.

As Jack has pointed out he can send/receive as if from his email address using Google and it is a known quantity that probably works!

I've set the phone up with teh BTinternet.com email account.
I get the same Connection Error message come up when it tries to send an email.

this happens whether I'm on a WiFi connection or off the 3G on the phone

:?:

JackClark 18 January 2012 04:30 PM

If you have your own domain then consider moving the email portion to Google Apps it's free and you'll have the benefit of your own domain and google email.

salsa-king 18 January 2012 04:50 PM

I'm almost sorted, I can now send from my info@neoquip.com account... this helped...

trying to set the btinternet.com account now

Jamescsti 18 January 2012 08:29 PM

No experience with your particular handset but when I did this for the wife's htc handset with a virgin email account I had the same issue,
I had all the pop settings correctly done which meant email was coming in ok but it sounds like the issue is with your smtp server settings and port numbers, have you checked those are correct with your service provider?

acstua 18 January 2012 08:42 PM

some will let you send from another network if you send with smtp auth on

acstua 18 January 2012 08:43 PM

and i hate to say it but Jacks answer is what i do with my old ntl account :P

salsa-king 19 January 2012 07:38 AM

I seem to be ok sending BTinternet, that was a staright forward set up, just swpped the port to 110

The outgoing settings on the Ace are:
SMTP = smtp.gmail.com
Port = 587
Security = TSS (accept all)
Tick Require sign-in
User name = just the bit in front of the at of username@gmail.com
Password = The gmail password

acstua 19 January 2012 08:30 AM

using the gmail app?

hutton_d 19 January 2012 09:06 AM

My outgoing settings are:

username/password
smtp server
SSL security
Port 465
