AIR FILTERS - NEWAGE WRX 2005 MODEL
I have a remapped 2005 blobeye WRX and was looking at changing stock filter to a performance one, either a bolt on or a drop in panel filter to fit original air box housing.
any suggestions/names and whether its worth it ? other mods include, DP decat, full 3" system with 4.5" tailpipe, 3 port boost control solenoid. |
Green panel filters are very popular on here mate and that's what I have. I think if you are going big power 400bhp + then I would go for a different set up, but the green panel filters or similar would probably be sufficient.

I had a green panel filter in my 2003 wrx think it was about £30

what about the Blue Cosworth panel Filters ? anybody tried them ? |
Got a KnN in the newage and can't fault it, had a ITG panel filter in my classic and it killed my MAF. So i'd avoid anything thats heavily oiled!! I've heard STI panel filters (if you can get a hold of one) and green are good too..

The differences between the various performance panel filters is pretty marginal... Green, K&N, it's all good.

Panel filter, either K&N or Green Cotton (both the same - Green cotton cheaper!) or spend close to £300 and upgrade to a full cold air induction kit.
Dont go for a bolt on cone filter as it will just suck in all the hot air from your turbo! |
Cold air intake is a bit pointless on the stock turbo and TMIC though.

K&N Claim 12bhp increase using the Typhoon kit with no other mods. Pretty impressive Id say!
We use the Pipercross Viper kits a lot as they also have the direct cold air intake hose. Both worth the money Id say! |

Seriously? :cuckoo: A turbo swap can be had for that sort of money if you're canny which would yeild somewhat more than 12bhp. So no, not very impressive even if it were true (I suspect the words "up to" probably precede the words "12bhp gain" in the brochure as well). The only reason they're "both worth the money" is because you're selling them! Since the stock intake with a panel filter is good for at least 350bhp and the TD04, injectors and TMIC become limiting factors way before the air intake, sorting those first is a much better way to spend your money. Anyway, back to the OP's original question... "any suggestions/names and whether its worth it?" £30-40 for a panel filter, probably. £300 for 12bhp with a CAI? um, let me think about that for a moment......... |

Oooohh... Someones got a bee in his bonnet about cold air intakes hasnt he!
I would always reccomend someone just replace the panel filter for a performance one, but my ppint was if you want to replace your stock intake then the only thing to do is bypass the open end 57i kits etc and go for a propper one. And 12bhp is an impressive improvement for an induction kit! Yeah, it may be promotional talk but they will happily provide you with a before and after power graph for a Subaru if you ask them! I was sent one a while ago and it backed up their claims! |

I'd love to see imperial evidence that a CAI will give 12bhp gain with no other mods but I won't hold my breath for it. On a big block carbureted engine, maybe but on an Impreza engine it's never going to happen.... The MAF reads the air flow in and the ECU injects a prescribed amount of fuel as set in the relevant load / rpm cell of the map - the only thing changing to a CAI without mapping will achieve is a lean running engine when the air flow exceeds to max load value in the map. Don't get me wrong, CAI has its place but only once the intake becomes the limiting factor and only when the car is mapped for it. |
