Declearing Sorn each year ?
 

As my impreza has been decleared sorn the last year i was checking through the records and have noticed its renewel for sorn is at the end of this month so i have sorn it again.

My question is this do i have to keep sorning the vehicle cant i just get intouch with dvla and tell them it will never be on a public road again as its my track car only.

Bit of a ball ache if you ask me to keep sorning it every year,also do i need the reg document anymore ?

I was thinking the same thing today as for the third year in a row I've had to do the same with my classic.

So for the last 3 years you have been sorning the vehicle ?

Have you tried ringing the dvla and asked the question?

Mine will never go back on the road so bit of a pain really dont want the worry of forgetting to sorn it it was only by chance i have renewed my tax for my daily driver on line and thought i would check and good job really as my impreza 's sorn runs out the end of january so have just done it again but i never got a reminder from the dvla as you do when retaxing a vehicle did you ?

mines been out of tax for 6 months now and has been in a garage off the road and i havent sorned it, any ideas whats going to happen when i try and tax it again, i have heard a fine, i havent sorned it because i forgot believe it or not! :(

I 'think' they can make you backdate the tax (and possibly a fine), but you'd need to check with the DLVA to confirm

I'm pretty sure you'll have to do it each year.

I guess you could declare the car as scrapped, but that would cause you an issue if you ever wanted to sell it...

Before i took mine off the road it still had a month of tax left on it i then started stripping it and decleared sorn after about 4 weeks or so (straight away), but i guess if you havnt sorn it and not paid the tax then im certain you will have back duty to pay, that why they introduced the sorn decleration to stop people( not saying you would by the way) from using the vehicle to get a few months free then taxing it from say 3 mths after it ran out.

YES you need do it every year. You also need to do it as soon as you purchased a car that is being kept off the road. You also need to SORN it if the car is not insured (regardless of tax status)

Then apply for SORN online too.

Also make sure you print out the confirmation and get it emailed too. I've had the website crash on me once and even though they sent me a confirmation email, a month later they sent me a naughty boy letter warning me that I haven't declared it as SORN. :rolleyes:

True mate definatly not going to declare it scrapped as a, its not ! and b, would definatly cause problems later if i did want to sell.

There must be a rule when a production car goes to a wrc team for car prep how do they go about it sorn it every year or just scrap.

Thats what ive done Ali but as i have just mentioned what do the top works teams do when they purchase a car for development same as us just keep the sorn decleration up to date ?

I guess either not register it in the first place, or just keep it taxed?

You will get an £80 fine and have to pay the back dated tax. I know as had this issue last year

So to summarise sorn it every year or scrap it on the V5C, il just have to set a reminder every year to sorn it on time don't want to be paying any excess tax than I have too but always thought you needed a valid mot and valid insurance to tax a vehicle if you haven't then legally how can they demand money off you if it's not got either ?

I suppose if you didn't declare sorn and didn't scrap it can they legally crush the vehicle if they found it say for instance outside my house on a trail or ???

sorry to thread jack but I have a question regarding a SORN vehicle if I was to take my car off the road and declare sorn do I still have to have insurance cover on it ??

Good question as insurance is valid providing it had current not and tax is in date !

If a car is sorned and kept off the road then it doesn't need to be insured.

so how does that work then im getting another car soon and want to take current car off the road until until its sold but cant really afford two lots of insurance

Sorn the current car. You will then not need to insure it or tax it.
The problem will arise when a potential customer wants to test drive it as sorn'ed cars or uninsured cars CAN NOT be driven on public roads.

The other issue is keeping an expensive car sorn and not insured from theft or damage.
