Restoring underbody ?
 

Hi while my scoob is off the road for the winter wondered about restoring underneath it .the cars silver and somebody has undersealed it black so basically want to remove all the running gear ,strip the factory underseal tho not sure what a should use to paint it with ? Do you get silver rubberised paint ? A can get all the other parts powder coated no probs thanks in advance for any ideas

You can get clear waxoyl in spray cans, it's very very good stuff!

Please don't use Waxoyl. It dries out, cracks and lets water in behind it, and this is from first hand experience. I used to use it until I discovered the Bilt Hamber stuff. Have a look at the comparison tests on the BH site to see what I mean.

You're much better off leaving any solid original underseal in place (if it's hard to get off, there's a good reason for that, ie it's still doing its job) and then using a modern product on any damaged areas. This is the BH alternative:

Waxoyl appeared in the 1960s and really has fallen a long way behind in vehicle protection, despite it being almost the 'Hoover' of the underseal world. You only have to look at the regular tests in the classic car press to see just how poor it is in comparison with modern alternatives.

No offence meant to you Davey incidentally. I'd have said the same until a couple of years ago.

Please dont use waxoyl. I used it on one of my old cars a few years ago, it went hard and split.

I have done this.

I even sanded the underside to bare metal, then used 2 component epoxy primer wich is very good rust protectant, then i painted with another 2 component paint over the primer.

But if you want to use the car as a everyday car and on bad roads (winter) this wont be good, it will increase the cabin sound and the paint will at some point chip off, so for a "normal" car the best is to use a good underseal. I dont know the options in UK but in Swe there are some common products like Dinotrol, Tectyl, Hagmans (T03 thin and then F40 thick) etc.

But as with any sealant. make sure the underneath is clean..dry and you'll get a solid and non cracking underseal. Can be pained over as well

Hammer****e is crap

I`ve been using this under my arches for the last 5+ yrs, it needs re-applying every 6 mths or every 12 depending on weather

I like that stuff too, despite it having Waxoyl in it, and I agree with your suggested re-application frequency. It's worked well since 2007 on an older car I also own.

Use tetrosyl with a schutz gun. Unbearable. My jeep Cherokee was done by myself 3 years ago and it is still in good order even in heavy wear areas where I coated twice.
