Where should my rev limit be on this engine?

Hi,

I've got a 2005 sti short motor with sti version 3 heads in my classic and I'm wondering what my rev limit should be because I've seen that version 3 sti's redline at 7,800rpm but my rev limit is set to 7,600rpm at the moment.

Is that because the rev counters are inaccurate? My rev limit is too low or it should actually be 7,600rpm lol.

The reason for asking is because mine is still making peak power at 7,600rpm so the turbo hasn't run out of puff. Basic spec is a low mileage 2005 sti 2.0 short motor with ported and polished (inlet side) sti 3 cylinder heads with standard cams & springs with loads of bolt on parts :)

Thanks,

Paul :)

Dont quote me on it but i thought the oem limiter kicked in a 8K

JDM's do Gaz but Paul has a UK STI engine and thats around 7.5k for the red line (not quite as good as the JDM cars ;))
The cut out is probably at 7.8k though, 8250rpm on a new age JDM STI :D

On a 2005 sti maybe but I have sti 3 heads? Does the sti 3 rev that far?

That's correct :) Are you also saying 7,800 for my engine then?

TonyBurns 27 December 2011 04:09 AM

The rev limit should be 7.5k and the cut should be at 7.8k if that makes sense? :)

Had v3 heads on my old classic (450hp), B Rawle refused to raise rev limit above 7.6k (I asked him to :lol1:) even though the engine could rev higher ... something to do with bits disintegrating & potential to destroy the engine at such high revs.

With those heads with wilder cams i would think it would be ok with the 8250 cut out, thats where it is on my type r, but i have never been that far up as peak power is around 6500 rpm, so your just wringing it's neck after that :nono:

I have very similar spec to you but with JDM bottom end.

2005 JDM STI Spec C bottom end
STI V3 heads.

Mine wil rev to 8250 I believe.

Your mapper can adjust the rev limiter if its wrong.

Thanks for the replies :) It sounds like the rev limit is in the correct place for my spec which is a shame because it does like to rev.
