Can anyone help me trace down a really annoying whistle on my car a MY00 PPP,
On light acceleration up to 3500rpm there is a whistling noise it has just developed over the last 3-4000 mile and is starting to bug me,
i have checked all the hoses for leaks and incorrect fitting and the belts seem to be the correct tension, it is not the normal turbo whistle, i have compared the car to a friend car and his is really smooth and quite

any help would be appreciated

Have you checked the intercooler fins?
Happened on mine, a stone had gone straight through the s0dding thing :( Got a nice P1 one on now :)

Unlikely but worth a look..

If it was the intercooler would i not experience a drop off in performance, the car still goes really well,

How do i check!!!

If it is the intercooler how much am i looking at to replace, and wots the diff between a standard one and a P1 item,

It will probably be the dump valve leaking, have a look here, I know its not the same MY as yours but it might help http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#3.1

Ok if its not the intercooler, and could be the blow off valve how do i test the blow off valve, is it ok to remove, is it possible to remove and inspect for damage to see if it has some crap in it, is it a simple job?????

DV comes off with 2 bolts, remove the pipe and off it comes.
The unit can then be inspected for damage.

You'll know if its the intercooler as it will have a hole in it.

The dump valve can prove tricky to check when off though, unless the rubber seal is obviously perished. Generally they suffer from spring weakening, which is only apparent with it in situ.
Try a good rolling road tune-up.

ok, i have had a look at my intercooler and there appears to be quite a large indentation (5-10mm) of the fins where a stone must of hit, is it possible for this to be my problem, ie a holed intercooler,

If the intercooler did have a small hole in it wouldnt i suffer a drop in performance as it would not hold the boost pressure,

As i has stated before the whistling noise is between 2-3000 rpm under light acceleration, and i can even vary the whistling noise by gently increasing and decreasing the rpm,

If this does indeed turn out to be a hole in the intercooler that is causing this, the big Question is HOW MUCH, because i am sure subaru will not pay out for a new one.
