£6000 what to buy?
 

Hi all.

New to the Impreza scene (had Evos for the last 5 years). I'm looking at buying an impreza next year after selling my forged evo IX due to the imminent birth of my first baby.

Got about £6k to spend but am confused by the amount of models available!

Currently I like the look of the:

type-R V5/6
Sti bug

Anything with a bit of tunability for circa 400 ponies, but should I watch out for anything?

If you want tunability to 400bhp then forget the classics, your looking at BIG money to get those there reliably, so its the STI bug.

Or you could look for a blobeye STI....much prettier than a bug :D

Don't waste your cash on a Subaru get a decent VW Golf diesel or similar, with a young baby you should be trying to move away from the image that a nedded up impreza will afford you.... ;)

Already got a decent family car for the daily duties, just want a cheap ish car for weekend blasts

Haven't there been a lot of engine rebuilds on these?

Arguably no more so than a Type R of the same year being in the UK and not mapped for our fuel.

You'll get rebuilt P1s with correct maps for your budget.

IMO, Prodrive Bugeye STI and a few pounds left over for mods/repairs.

why dont you just stick with evos if thats what you know?can you not get an evo 5/6 for that money...

He wants a car he can tune to 400bhp, that aint a P1, well not unless you fit most of the parts off a new age that is :lol1: so you may as well start with a better base model ;) (anyway he did say v5/v6 type R's and we do know the JDM cars are superior ;):D)

Fancy a change from the Evo scene and you seem to get a bit more for your money compared to a V/VI.

What model onwards can be remapped?

Specialists - Scoobyclinic, Zen, RCM, Enginetuner. Any others?

Think the easiest are my2000 onwards , but im sure someone more technical will know better than me

The bugeye sti is the best bang for buck scoob when it comes to modding and power gains. Dont go chasing numbers mate as it becomes expensive;)

Haha too true mate. Got bored of speaking to my bank manager everyday chasing pub numbers in my 450hp Evo IX!

For £6k i would say up your budget slightly and get a 05 blob UK STI, it will save you a fortune in the long run and 400/ 450 bhp is quite easy and cheap to get to from that base, it is the best uk car to date for modding to those power levels out of the box and being relatively new you won't be replacing things that break due to fatigue/age.

Type r is a fantastic week end toy, but it is just that, and if you want to take it to a reliable 400bhp you will need another 10k on top, unless you find one already done, but i emphasise properly as that is the crooks of it, there are many out there that will claim 400 and maybe they are close but no cigar and it's a case of when will it go pop if it's not done right.

Having both i wont be going back to a classic and am about to sell/ break my type r and i'm now back in a blob and loving it :D

Classics can't cope with big power, thats about the only thing i prefer about Evo's. Although you could buy an STI type R that has had an engine rebuild thats within your budjet, mod it to 350bhp and due to it being pretty light it will feel alot quicker, it will feel like a 400bhp newage.

But if your really wanting 400+ i'd go for the 2005 Ver 9 blob Sti, very capable car considering most only came with 265bhp out the box. My old man's took a hell of a beating.

Anyway, i'd be happy with a car that only had 350bhp but handled superbly, so i'd say Type R.

I completely agree on the reliability point. Newage cars are by far the superior car when talking about engine strength and box strength.
Bud lads, we all got to admit that for pure fun and adrenaline pumping driving nothing beats a 400 bhp classic on a windy road on a dry Sunday afternoon.
For everyday use then a newage is by far the best bet, but for shear fun and excitement a well sorted classic wins hands down.

So many people are trying to get out of cars like ours at the minute and bargains are becoming more and more common. If I was in the OP's position I'd wait and find a well sorted classic with either a forged build or newage bottom end linked with a 6 speed.
This way he will get newage reliability with classic excitement.

I currently have a pretty well sorted classic that is used solely as a weekend toy (covered less than 2K this year for instance) and I will honestly say its the most fun I've ever had in a car. It's noisy, bumpy, aggressive and generally not easy to drive, but would I swap it for a similarly powered newage.....would I feck.

Yip what ditchmyster said. I would of thought you will find a nice 04 plate STI for that money and might web find one with 400 ish already. They are out there and not being in a rush to spend is a good thing. Just keep looking and you'll find one, and blob eyes look the best, IMO :D

i bought an 53 plate sti 2 months ago, my 1st scoob and absolutely love it. paid 7.5k for it, but had only recently been modded and mapped to 330bhp

Great advice but if funds don't allow I would go for the bugeye sti if you like the look that is, 6 speed box, brembo brakes and one of the strongest engines supplied from the factory. Buy a prodrive one or fit the bumper at s later date and you have a winner. These look the nuts with a slight drop on the right wheels and can be nodded over time if you wish.

I think I must have got a good deal then, got MY03STI ppp with mods and mapped to 323 HP about 5 months ago for £5500

£7500 sounds all the money to be honest with the way the market is. Has it got über low milage ??

I will be picking up a mint P1 shortly and will be out of pocket by 7500. In some peoples eye's i am mad but i want a pretty car that looks great in the garage and hold a fair value and is still fun to drive:)

I think what drew me to the sti bug was the potentially stronger engine. They do look great with the right set of wheels and blacked out de tangoed front lights.

With it being a 2nd car for weekends only I can afford to forget the luxuries too and get a rawer feeling car.
