Thinking of leaving.....

...The country.

Had some personal issues recently and as i've just finished studying i am tempted to go away for a while, somewhere between 3-6 months. I am thinking of USA...Leaving around Jan-Feb time.... Would this be a good time to go? anyone done it before?

Will have about 3-5K to last me as long as poss.

Does anybody know how their visas work out there? Can i work at all or do i have to stay a tourist strictly?

Snazy 20 December 2011 04:29 PM

Look on their website, all rather strict to be honest.
Lots of different visa's depending on intentions, and with 5k in your pocket you wont be considered as much more than a tourist.

Do some homework and reading up mate, its not as simple as it sounds

Are you now qualified? If so, have you thought of emigrating?

If not, please be careful about taking time out like this. There are loads of fol out tghere without jobs. When you come back you are still battling them for whatever job you want, and you must then explain wht you did in the last 6 months and why.......

Remember that although the grass always seems greener on the other side, in reality it often isn't. And £3-5 will last no time at all.

Man up FFS, put your past behind you... get a job and have fun

Coffin Dodger 20 December 2011 04:56 PM

Why don't you go to Thailand or somewhere like that? £5k would last ages out there even if you decided to live like royalty. When you've had enough lounging around head to Oz or NZ and find some work, just enough so you have somewhere to sleep, food and drink, and plenty of time for surfing :)

The US is very expensive and it'll be difficult to get a working visa.

NOSSY_89 20 December 2011 04:59 PM

Don't run. I was thinking of running off to Dubai when I broke up with my fiance. Think about the people and things you are leaving behind.

BOB.T 20 December 2011 04:59 PM

5k won't last long in the US...great place though :) (shame it's full of Yanks)

JackClark 20 December 2011 05:05 PM

If you don't know anyone or the place, don't do it. The US is a tough place when you're on your own and don't have a job. Australia will give you a visa if you're young enough.

wayne9t9 20 December 2011 05:17 PM

You can only visit the U.S. for up to 90 days, any longer you need a visa. If you want a visa you have to arrange it before you travel.

Indeed. my mate lived in London earning 36k a year but having to work every hour god sent and living in a shoebox. He upped sticks and moved to Thailand and now owns a place with a pool (technically I think his wife owns it) and has a much better quality of life.

Go to Pattaya for a week in Thailand, budget on about £100 a day and you'll live like a king, come back home and take the world on.

Trout 20 December 2011 05:43 PM

The grass is greener where you water it

GlesgaKiss 20 December 2011 05:46 PM

Think the US is a bit of a 'mare. Seems like you need a permit to take a p*ss over there.

speye91 20 December 2011 10:12 PM

I done it. Post more in a while when I have time.

lordharding 20 December 2011 10:35 PM

Thailand or phillipines
You would live like a king on £50-£100 per day but could survive on £30

USA very expensive

speye91 20 December 2011 10:42 PM

I never found the Us expensive at all, in my time out there...But I was not on the tourist trail...South City boy...All the dives....I was in there...lol. But then again, some of my good friends had their own Biker gang and were mad as fook.

Look at Vietnam,my brother went there for a couple of weeks & ended up
staying for 6 months. The Vietnemese love Brits & living costs are low. He ended up working casually on some Internet business for extra cash. There is a big expat community out there as well.

scoobyraj 20 December 2011 10:58 PM

Don't know what ur qualified to do but I've heard it's pretty easy to get a job as an English teacher in Thailand/Vietnam/etc if you're from the UK -that could keep you going if you did want to stay out there for longer.

Big Pete 20 December 2011 11:08 PM

Do it!

I worked away for a year or so and it was a blast! :luxhello:

You'll be so pleased to have done it but really p155ed if you don't

Good luck! :thumb:

My brother moved to Oz over two years ago, he did have a job there when he went.

It was still very expensive, and he lived in a hostel for a few months until he had a few months rent saved up ontop of general 'spends'.

Now he's doing that well for himself I can't see him coming back! :(

every1sgottablue1 21 December 2011 10:44 AM

Does the Thailand budget include lady boy rental??? :)

I'm sure it could be arranged for "good price", got to do these things while you're on your world tour, embrace local cultures etc. Just take plenty of extra strong Durex with you especially if going anywhere near Africa :lol1:

+1 for thailand, 5k will last a long time, u will come home a happy man to say the least lol

pretty amazing experience. although it helps if yr a bit handy and a bit hard, he had to beat a number of people up who tried to rob him on the way.
