Morning peeps,
I'm just wondering how many type r's on here are still on their original engines?
I've seen so many threads where these engines have gone bang and I'm always worrying now.I've thought a couple of times about selling mine because of this but I absolutely love the car.
I'm on 60,000 miles now with standard everything and great history,and although I'm desperate to start modding I'm reluctant to over stress anything.

So to any type r owners
Are you still on the original engine?
If so what mileage are you at?
What mods?

To those that have had rebuilds
Did you have a rebuild because it went bang?
Did you rebuild because you just wanted to?

ive just spent 4k on sti9 jdm rebuid,mine went pop at 78k,(whilst having it mapped for uk fuel)and most of them if not been mapped will usually go at 70-80k.
the problem comes from jap cars that are designed to run on 100+ octane fuel,but most spend alot of their life detting on 97/98 octane.(depending on when imported).if you are considering buying one i would advise buying one that has has a good rebuild/new engine from a reputable builder and has been mapped for uk fuel.just my opinion,but knowing what i know now,thats what i would do!
having said all that....yes ive spent good money on a new motor and its as sweet as a nut now and i know exactly what ive got with an engine capable of 450bhp.im only running 338bhp.
it all depends on what your budget is like,if you found a GOOD fresh import,the first thing i would do is map for uk fuel and give it a full service inc cambelt etc.

Cheers for the replies.I've had one for 6 months now and it's great to drive,was fully serviced and a cam belt kit upon purchase.I only run on v power.If the shell near me runs out of v power I simply won't put any fuel in until they've got more.
It's going in for a service next week and for brakes all round.I've done 4000 kms since its last service.I also replaced the maf a few months ago.
I treat it like a baby,wash it 3 times a week,polish it every month and reset the ecu now and then to keep an eye on everything.
I just can't shake this feeling of worry.

Ps Tom you're so lucky,you've still got 12 months left of decent warranty.

Mate I hear you about the warranty but sods law will always come into play.

Seriously stop worrying mate the engine sounds perfect and get it remapped!

I drive mine like it should be driven and if somethings gonna go or something ugly is gonna rise I'd rather find out sooner than later.

Or you leave it as it is and knowing your attention to looking after the car it will probably last and last!

You can't go on mileage when trying to work out if/when it will go bang. I've known ultra low mileage cars to sh1t themselves, well cared for cars, average milage etc etc.
Every engine is different, some will last longer than others at different power levels. If your car is standard and serviced regulary (and properly) then you 'should' be ok so just enjoy it.
If the worst was to happen then you'll just have to deal with it then and remember, it's not the end of the world. Newage STI lumps can be had a good price now.

Version 4, original engine.
106923 miles (may be slightly less as not sure when conversion to mph was done,may be in paperwork will look later :) )
Owned for just over 2 years (clutch/cambelt replaced when I bought car).
Running about 305bhp via Simtek Ecu remapped by Duncan of Racedynamix.
The Simtek is used to put the CEL on at about 6000 rpm to indicate when to change up but I rarely go that high.
Engine oil changed about every 6 months,diff/gearbox checked every service.

Mine went bang 6 months after buying the car, only mods were a cat back exhaust and panel filter, serviced and new maf as soon as I bought it, i was the first uk owner, and always ran on v- power, it let go on a rolling road day where I thought it was in good hands and nothing could go wrong, I only went for peace of mind that it was running ok. 5 grand later and a freshly built API forged motor and I still think it going to blow up everytime I drive it, if it's going to blow it will do, not much you can do to stop it only make sure you do all the right things, which it sounds like you are doing. Get a remap and good luck.

I'm trying sooo hard to resist the urge to start collecting mods.Maybe a simtec after Christmas.:norty:

MY98 running the original engine, although different turbo, injectors, Apexi ECU etc to get to around 370bhp. Now just shy of 43,000 miles and (touch wood!) still going strong.

Mine went at 99k in April this year, engine is in my shed, awaiting many parts for a 500bhp build ;) should be fun :)

I've got the original engine, but it has been rebuilt. Crank and head gaskets went at around 53K. Still smiling though :D

The car was about 18 months in on ownership and had bee previoulsy rebuilt in Japan by the looks of it before it was imported 2 years ago. In hindsight it was showing signs anyway. Using a bit of coolant, but with no effect to power

These cars have generally been driven hard and are ageing so don't be surprised by it

Its now had the Apexi removed and a SIMTEK fitted to go mafless when that went. Fitted with AL and LC :D

hi new member i was a biker but the other half wanted me off the bike always fanced a subaru impreza so I bought a 96 type r with a head gasket problem. the engine is in my garage, I have stripped it all interior out engine just need to get the box and diff and shafts. I have bought a EJ22 engine which I am going to stroked and put a 6 speed box in, I have just bought a genuine 22b rear spoiler and I am looking to do a full 22B rep dont know about bhp but i would likke 500-600 bhp

Please tell me it's standard, would be a very desirable car that with 31K and in original condition.

Something just occured to me.
Do the sti 5 and 6 go through the same failure rate as the type r 5 and 6?
The reason I ask is I haven't seen many threads on them blowing up,and I thought they were identical to the type r engine wise.
I've just been browsing on the auto trader and there is many sti's from 98-2000 well over the 100k on them.

Started knocking while getting mapped at 99000kms.Driven for 2+ years with fmic,decat, induction kit etc unmapped.Always serviced on time.Maybe its something to do with the short ratio box:wonder:
I seem to notice it more since the old engine went how bloody high it seems to be revving.
