People in Scotland Warned Not to Travel Unless Absolutely Necessary

Due to high winds. Seems a bit OTT, but already very windy here and supposedly we could see up to 100mph gusts.

The wind is no worse than it has been around here in previous winters, and there was no fuss then about not travelling etc. A lot of schools closed too, and I can't ever remember being off school because of 'wind'. Unis in Glasgow sending people home as well I've heard.

What do you all think? Sensible advice or health and safety gone mad?

Jay

Ant 08 December 2011 02:11 PM

I was going to be sheeting a shed roof today. Wouldn't even be physically possible, never mind whether it's scary or not. Lol, so no way I could work.

Do you work at Grangemouth? Take it they've switched off the massive flames today? :lol1: No idea what that is (burning off some kind of excess?) but it can look pretty cool when it's towering into the air. Some days they've got it cranked up and other days it's hardly going at all.

If you seen big flames it means we have a problem! :-) the neighbours loves us!

This was our plant during a start up taken from the offices across the road!

Haha. That's a cracking photo though!

I just meant the towers... not sure what they're called - still quite a sight if you don't work there.

The bits with the flames are flare towers, we burn off spec or excess products when we are starting up or having problems. The distillation columns separate the the cracked gas into different chemical components. My plants main product is ethylene for making polyethylene products.

GlesgaKiss 08 December 2011 03:55 PM

Apparently 165mph now recorded at Cairngorm summit (record is 173 in 1986). Hold on to your umbrellas!
