Done to death - panel filters

Yes, I know, along with "what dump valve" and "what oil" threads, this is next on the list of 'done to death' topics... but I'm rekindling myself with Subaru ownership still after a 3 year break.

Now my Scoob is a my99 uk wagon with the rather fragile MAF and I wish to change the standard air filter. She's getting mapped by Bob Rawle next month so need a replacement by then.

1. Brands to go for?
2. Oiled or dry - any possible damage to said MAF?
3. Anything of possible concern.

Guys on my99-00 Subaru's - what's your preferred air filter (no induction kits please) and why?

Thanks :thumb:

I had a cosworth blue panel filter before my simtek was fitted and went mafless, ran fine with no issues and cost only £20 odd.

ditchmyster 06 December 2011 07:40 PM

Green panel filter, i believe, think it's K&N but not 100% i have standard STI in mine which was more to do with what was available when i had my simtec fitted, not sure if theres that much difference between the two, i shall be interested in what the mappers say.

:)

ScoobyDoo69 06 December 2011 07:42 PM

I always read great things about the Green panel filter, same for the K&N.

I had a Simota one fitted to mine prior to my induction kit from APi and that was fine too, slightly more intake noise, seemed to do the job.

Scooby B 06 December 2011 07:44 PM

Green panel, cosworth or K&N are 3 of the most popular. Avoid oil coated filters if you still run with your MAF.

birchy2010 06 December 2011 07:45 PM

Cosworth filter was on mine when i ran my airbox.

Rob Day 06 December 2011 07:48 PM

I wouldnt bother with an air filter period, they are just darn restrictive LOL. Seriously though Ive also heard Green cotton and K&N. Others that spring to mind too are ITG, Cosworth and STI Performance although this one isnt cheap! Rob

Moley 06 December 2011 07:50 PM

I've got the blue Cosworth one, seems to do the job ok

Saalro 06 December 2011 07:51 PM

Is there any proof that these ones mentioned above are actually any better than the OEM or any other parts stores own brand filters?

Thanks
Sam

Steve T 06 December 2011 07:55 PM

I,ve used K+N panel filters on all my scoobs over the last 11 years. My last car, a MY 00 UK Classic ran one for 5 years with no problems. :thumb:Steve.

ditchmyster 06 December 2011 08:03 PM

Who's the green panel filter made by?

chopperman 06 December 2011 08:06 PM

K&N for me.

Mr moff 06 December 2011 08:40 PM

Blue cosworth for me.

impreza-1 06 December 2011 08:44 PM

It's made by Green Cotton Filters, which are a very good motorsport brand. Confusingly, my HKS filter is also green!

I also have K&N & blue Cosworth panel filters, which I think all perform the same.

I have a HKS:thumb:

I`m pretty sure Green are oil coated cos when I bought mine I remember thinking "get a dry one next time, muppet"!!!!! :lol1:

m77nos 06 December 2011 08:56 PM

Ive got a do-luck one on mine and believe its oil coated? is this no good for MY03 STI?

Chris

There is nothing wrong with oilled filters, the oil is designed retain fine dust particals for better filteration.

It's only when people over oil their filters after cleaning, that causes problems.

When you buy a filter service kit there is a guide in there about how much oil to spray on & you can check it afterwards by weighing it on a set of fine scales. Make sure you ask for permission before you borrow the scales though, you coulld get into trouble....

I run K&N green panel too, no probs at all, lovely curve on the dyno recently.. so, at what point does one go induction??

For me preferred would be an OEM paper panel or maybe a big paper cone in a box. Unless going MAFless, I'd rather spend £20 on a new filter every 10K than add MAF risk.

I've read that the Honda S2000 has a big paper cone filter as standard...

topshot 06 December 2011 10:04 PM

In order of preference:

1. Cosworth - Dry filter
2. Pipercross - Dry Foam
3. HKS -Dry Foam
4. K&N or Green Oiled Cotton

monkfish2 07 December 2011 09:14 AM

I had my green panel filter replaced when shot and was told the standard filter would near enough do the same job. I'm still in 2 minds though whether to replace it to green again as it was mapped with this in.

L.J.F 07 December 2011 09:49 AM

I use green cotton on all my scoobs as they are good value for money and are more or less fit and forget. No panel filter or induction kit will improve bhp but you do get a nice sucking sound;)

Bristol98 07 December 2011 10:09 AM

I'm running a Simota on a MY2000 wagon, all good so far!
