my WRX blob eye is off for the MOT nxt week so It it having a oil change at the same time so what it the best oil to use :wonder::wonder:

ive just rebuilt mine and im useing valvoline durablend 10/40 synthetic

Millers CFS 10w-50 mate

motaquip (I can supply oil ;))

5w/40 titan fuchs racing fully synthetic, after using 10/40 for running in period over 500 miles on rebuilt engine.

10w60 mobil 1, but both Fuchs Silkoline & Millers are good choices too.

wanna use a 10w40 at least for classic though.

10W40 or 10W50 depending on time of year, Millers Motorsport Full Synthetic ;)

Just be mindfull that some cheaper oils are the same as some more expensive oils. You are paying for packaging and a name.

A friend of mine used to work in a castrol factory, the same oil was used to fill castrol containers aswell as asda containers!

I'm not saying stick the cheapest oil in you can find :)

+1, the cheaper oils are more likely to degrade a little quicker but thats about it, but if your doing regular oil changes (Most Impreza drivers do) it doesn't really matter at all!

Impreza specialist garages use all sorts of different oils from 10-40semi, 15-50syn, 5-40syn, 10-60syn.
Some use branded oils such as Pro R, Mobil 1 and Millers others use 10-40 semi brought in bulk from a wholesaler!

Most Impreza drivers do go for the name and buy expensive oils but it makes no difference! Motoquip oil will suffice. I personally recommend Shell Helix HX7 10-40 Semi, a good brand and 5 litres will cost around £20!

Motoquip matey. Oil itself doesn't degrade, it is the additives mixed in which eventually degrade. If you change your oil to service schedule it will be fine.

There is loads of different type of reasons for degradation and breakdown of oils isn’t there? At Uni we were told thermal degradation is the most common and this basically happens when the oil is heated over a certain temp in a high performance engine. This causes the viscosity of the oil is change breaking it down. I thought that thermal stability of oil can’t be increased via additives and the only way to improve this factor was by the refining processes removing compounds etc etc.

As Engine temp increases this would obviously increase degradation, this is where the high quality and budget oils come into play. I was taught that the refining process is what differs the two oils and their quality and performance. Millers oils etc are highly refined with anti oxidants etc, however average oil is not refined to the same quality, this is where the relationship between the oil and its performance comes in.

In conclusion I’ve been taught and always thought that expensive oils are refined to a higher quality giving better operating temp ranges and a more resistant breakdown and different types of degradation. Cheaper oils are refined to a “budget” quality giving a lower ability to avoid degradation, so the cheaper oils can be used as long as they are changed frequently in high performance engines. So people who buy expensive oils (£100 for 5l) and are changing them every 6k are not getting the potential out of the oil and are wasting money! Whereas people who buy normal oil (£20 for 5l) are changing at 6k when the oil is starting to breakdown and degrade.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo don't use that mate. Didn't you see the topic about engine oils the other day. Keep away from mobile and castrol oil. They have that magnetic technology things and that messes up turbo engines.

oils a nightmare lol. So many Impreza specialists use Castrol and Mobil 1!! :cuckoo:

There are specialists as well as the guy who used to own H's spec C. If they say don't use it then fine by all means don't listen to them what do they know they are seasoned professionals:D

It's all down to preference from individuals and professionals, I’d rather not name the specialists and what oil they specifically use. 1 "professional" says never use fully synthetics others say never use semi synthetic oils! Some say quality oils only, others use the same stuff in their 600bhp race engines and their 80bhp courtesy cars. The oil argument could go on forever I suppose!

I totally agree with oilman as to magnatec being a basic low grade oil in comparison to other quality oils therefore breaking down quicker than quality oils, however I don’t see how it could have a relation with turbo seal faults etc, I maybe wrong though who knows! It’s clear that oil is massively down to preference, I’m sure we’ll all be fine just don’t use .........lol. :thumb:

Yeah there are so many other factors that could make it look like the oil was to blame.
