GC8 Type RA Rebuild
I'm new to this scooby scene and have purchased a GC8 Type RA import. It had a few problem like oil leak, faulty knock sensor, faulty boost selnoid and wasn't boosting properly. I tried to sort the leak, but failed and ended up messing up my bearings. Just before that happened I managed to sort out a few of the other problems and got the car boosting nicely. I was blown away by the power of this machine and instantly fell in love. So I have now decided to strip the block down and rebuild from scratch. I also gave her a new lovely coat of candy paint as she was looking very shabby after previously being a show car, or so the last owner stated. I'll be posting more details and pictures and would appreciate some advice as it's the first scooby I've ever had or dealt with. At the moment I'm in need a of a full gasket set top and bottom. Timing belt and some ARP head bolts. I've brought some over sized ALC bearing and I'm planning to get the crank machined. I've been told I probably only need a polish, but I've already brought the bearings on advice! Any advice on this rebuild would be great. Thanks

Speak to someone like API for the best advice.

Get a brand new v9 sti crank as the old one wont be up for the job for to long, the v9 jobby is recommended by all engine builders.

Don't re-use your existing crank, unless you like throwing money away. Subaru cranks are expensive to have re-ground & polished & done properly. Its a false economy. you are better off with a new crank. Google API Impreza or Enginetuner, Speak to David or Alan, respectively & get there opinion on the best way forward. Sounds like you have already wasted money on oversized bearings.
Been down the rebuild route myself, its not cheap but it is a hell of a lot more expensive if you skimp the first time round. |

Lol, yeah, it was originally the same colour as team orange, but it was done cheaply. I looked at other oranges as I liked the look and came across Craige's Bug eye show car and that was it I was in love. I was going to do it the same colour paint as his, but any repairs would of been way to expensive. I wanted it to stand out as I may make it a show car. What do you think? Does it have potential?
I had a good read today regarding what you guys had mentioned and I see the problem. It definetly isn't worth the risk. So I have decided to go with a v9 crank. David I realised your not to far from me so I guess you've just become my new bud and adviser regarding this project. I'll give you a call tommrrow as suggested. Thanks again for all the assistance and advice you guys have given so far. |

If your car is a genuine RA then its going to be worth more in standard form. They are fairly thin on the ground these days as a lot have been beaten with the Barry stick. Like I said, its your car & you have to drive it.

Ok done a quick price up and realised I'll have to put on hold. My wedding, new born on the way and a new rebuild is not a good combo!

Watch out for rust especially due to being an import. Oh and get yourself to the WMI section lol.

Ok, slightly confussed here with the v9 crank. Can someone please clarify if there are different cranks? I mean did all come nitrated?
Which is the one which is crossed drilled and has grey/steel blades rather than black? For the life of me I can't seem to identify what I have! Thanks guys. |
The STI 9 crank (well no such thing actually as the numbering stopped on 6 ;)) is the JDM twin scroll crank, its cross drilled and nitrided, uk cars dont come with this (cross drilled), but if you carried on with the numbering then (only jdm cars would have numbering) it would be a 2003 model car which were the first twin scroll cars :D
