Best place to sell my car privately?

Hi

I haven't sold a car privately for ages, I've been lazy and pxed them.

Thought I might try this time to limit the hit a little.

If you don't know;) its a 2011 535d.

Is Autotrader the best bet?

Thanks

chocolate_o_brian 27 November 2011 07:15 PM

Hi Deep, Autotrader are usually a good solid bet and you can sometimes find offers regarding the cost for magazine/web/mobile app. exposure for your advertisement.

I would also try Pistonheads too. I have sold a few cars (of differing value) hassle free and I believe it's still £10 to advertise.

Good luck on the hit, it won't be pretty. ;)

donny andi 27 November 2011 07:18 PM

No matter where you advertise you will still get the .......muppets/time wasters and potential thieves
Even on forums the tranks will come at you....I had a evo on the mlr one plank turned up put overalls on and proceeded to get a trolley jack out :brickwall

M3csl on m3cutters....kid from London all the way to me in Doncaster , turned up , took it out and the told me he didn't have the cash available for 3 month+ :brickwall

911 porker.....met bloke at train station he was covered in flaky skin and scabs ....after he had been in the car 3/4 mins I stopped the car and told him to do one......dirty **** was scratching scabs off next to me

Glws......think I just attract the wankers:lol1:

stilover 27 November 2011 07:19 PM

Autotrader or Pistonheads.

Last car I advertised on both was my Impreza. Was on Pistonheads first, and just got a few muppets asking dumb questions. One guy wanted to know if I'd sell the wheels only? :cuckoo:

Stuck in on Autotrader after a few weeks on Pistonheads, and had it sold within a week.

Ebay ...Ding (if you price it right )

For a 2011 Bimmer?

s70rjw 27 November 2011 09:03 PM

Gumtree is free and I used it to sell wife's car recently.
A p ex value had already been agreed which I was happy with, as Gumtree is free I thought I'd give it a shot and ended upwith a fair bit more.
I didn't have any 3rd parties call either....

Is it just me that doesn't see the problem with the above?

Do you also have a problem with people removing trim to check for accident damage?

500 27 November 2011 09:24 PM

Ding, I'd try Autotrader/Top Marques, Ebay, Pistonheads and my dad used to do well out of The Sunday Times on cars over £30k, not sure what the fee is for it now

Dingdongler 27 November 2011 10:17 PM

Thanks to all.

I think I'll target Autotrader and Pistonheads in the first instance. I'll be putting the car up for sale after Christmas ( I hear this is the best time to sell a car:lol1:)

:lol1: But his Mrs is size 6-8 with fake tits and perfect - apparently ;)

I've taken a jack when looking at cars before, NEVER had any issue from the seller becuase of it. Maybe it's an honesty thing. ;)

stoneface 28 November 2011 12:13 AM

Dont see the problem with jacking a car up! Especially an Evo, a lot of them look like they have lived on a seabed for half their lives when you look underneath.

MMT WRX 28 November 2011 08:14 AM

Pistonheads prices seem higher than those on the Autotrader site, I've just bought one of these albeit a few years older and it was a chunk cheaper than the cheapest on PH even though the overall spec, history etc is better. Also, is it worth trying some of the BMW forums?

zip106 28 November 2011 12:35 PM

I reckon the problem you'll have by selling privately is finance.

No doubt you'll be wanting more than 30 grand for it, and there's the issue.
Most people wanting to spend that sort of money will want finance - which you can't give.

I don't know if there's a waiting list for these (?), so if there is you might strike it lucky, but it seems there are more of these cars run as company vehicles than private ones.

Good luck, and I look forward to the next 'What Car' thread.

p.s. Have you tried WBAC?

:lol1:

stilover 28 November 2011 01:04 PM

You could try webuyanycar.com

Don't laugh. They were £2.5k better than any dealer when I sold my 370Z.

Jimpreza 28 November 2011 03:05 PM

WBAC also offered a friend £42k for his car that he's trying so sell for £44-£45k so not a million miles off.

Jimpreza 28 November 2011 03:06 PM

Surely there are plenty of finance companies that will allow you to buy a car and give you personal finance.

zip106 28 November 2011 03:30 PM

There aren't that many finance houses that will give you more than £30k to buy a used car privately, even less so if you want it financed on a balloon payment - which over £30k a lot will be.
Over that price and buying from a dealer isn't a problem, even if not using the dealers finance.

Running a bit off topic here fella
Could well be a wanker :thumb:
You seem to come across as one.......maybe that's why you had the car keyed??

It's a 'where's best to sell a car'.......not let someone get slated?
As for my missis.......post some pics up of your missis , and you 'cob' , and we'll see who has a pretty missis :thumb:

zip106 28 November 2011 07:43 PM

Chaps, you're taking this a bit off topic aren't you?

Worst time of the year to sell most cars (not 4x4s) is the last week of Nov. Best time is when the sun is shining, the daffodils are out, and the pay/annual bonuses are in - end of March to end of May.

hodgy0_2 28 November 2011 09:02 PM

i think the fact that it is free to advertise on PH (for the simple ads) invites chancer's and dreamers, who put their "pride and joy" on the site for ludicrous prices

in the hope someone is as daft as them

i would go Autotrader, or a beemer forum, or maybe the Sunday Times/Telegraph motoring sections

Dingdongler 28 November 2011 10:31 PM

Thanks for the advice.

I find the issue with selling cars over £30k and finance a little confusing though. There are private classifieds for much more than that on pistonheads ie high end Porsches, Ferraris etc.

Thanks

zip106 28 November 2011 10:48 PM

You're quite correct Ding, but see how long some of those ads on PH have been on for.

You'll find the independent Porsche dealers selling cars like hot cakes and the private sellers struggling.

If bought 4 cars in the last 2 years and sold 1.
In this time I've spoken to a fair few specialist dealers and finance providers who all told me about the stringent conditions on buying high end cars privately.

When I bought my 996turbo I had a £20k deposit to put down on a £40k car and there weren't many companies that'd lend to me because I was buying privately - and I have a very good credit rating.

Personal loans over £25k aren't easy to come by, so unless a buyer has a £10k+ deposit they're pretty stuffed.
