EVO 5 GSR

hi there anybody ever have one and what did they think of them, are they hard to source parts for,

dont mean to be ignorant by coming on to a subaru site and asking this thanks, which subaru would be the closet match to one, sti?

They are pretty old now, and a lot are rusty underneath.

Look on lancerregister.com and try to find a well maintained car that is known to the community. You can search the owner's previous posts to get some idea of the history of the car and the care/attitude of the owner. Sometimes you can find gems this way. Some cars obviously have had far more spent on them than they are selling for and you might find something with great parts and workmanship, sometimes folders of receipts you would not believe. Others are absolute rotters.

The range of quality of a used Evo 5 can literally be from new car condition to a dangerous rust bucket with a screwed engine, gearbox and AYC.

From the same era as an STI v4 - about 1998

As said above....you would be better to look on the MLR - www.lancerregister.com
If your looking at an Evo 5 this is a 13 year old car so be very careful to check underneath the car for rust. Price wise you can pick them up for £4000-£7000 for a minty example with plenty of history. Make sure it has been serviced every 4500 miles or 6 months, which ever comes first. Very important to check the AYC has been serviced regularly too.
Performance wise your looking at 280 bhp in standard form but with a complete turbo back 3" exhaust, uprated fuel pump & remap you are looking at anything from 350-380 bhp.......we've owned 3 Evo's & loved them all but be aware they are not cheap to run, returning approx 200 miles to a full tank & regular servicing is a MUST.
We are now on our 3rd Subi & although not as potent as an Evo in some ways we love the way they drive.....& you can't beat that flat four sound track :lol1:...we're planning on staying in the Subi fold for a while now :thumb:

i ve had 1 mate . my mate builds evos for track days . if im honest there faster and handle better that any scooby of that age . i would buy 1 again ...

donny andi 26 November 2011 01:37 PM

I've had 5's,6's,7's,8's and a mak.......
They are a quicker sharper car than a scoob........BUT I've never had a scoob go wrong apart from my p1 which was new at the time
EVERY evo I've had has either done the ayc in or gearbox, front hubs are weak as piss , tbh every evo I've had I assumed they would go wrong on every journey :lol1:
Don't get me wrong they do what they say they do....cheap as chips to get to 400/400 unlike a scoob......but they are a weak car all in all

Out of the 10+ evo's I've had......I've lost 50k , as my missis chirps on in every fooookin argument that's half a house :(

As John has said they are old now and seam to rust alot more than Impreza's of the same age, even some of the 7's and 8's are getting in a bad way now, one of the first places that seams to be affected is the spare wheel well both uderneath and inside the boot.

I was a member of the lancer register for years and i have to admit like most of them on there i was brain washed into thinking they are far superior to impreza's without ever owning one :o

In terms of driving unless its a JDM Sti or Spec c the Evo of simlar age will be better, build quality id have to say the Impreza is better, dont believe all the talk on the MLR about chocolate engined Subaru's(the new X's seem worse than the P1!) they have a few problems of their own.

I havent had to replace a thing on my Spec c coming on 2 years, my Evo 6 (owned by forum members from new) cost thousands each year, added to that the rust was getting bad underneath and months after selling it the fuel tank required a replacement.
Some will say oh it couldnt of been undersealed, well my brother had one of the few official uk 6's undersealed from new and owned by a prominent forum member and it was pretty rotten after 7 years, also the electrical system becomes problematic with age.

After they slipped below the 10-12k mark i very much doubt many will have been serviced every 4500 miles so expect diff problems, clutch doesnt last long no matter how its driven £1100 ish fitted. Gearbox's are not a strong point either.

Parts were easy enough to get from places like Ears or Camskill, others like Arnside motorsport also good.

I still think the 5's and 6's look better than any impreza to date bar the 22b, if i was to have another one it would have to be a 5 or 6 RS, GT in the 9's this takes away any potential AYC problems. If you can afford the thousands in maintance and find a good one, go for it, but if you want to drive a car without worrying about things going wrong buy an impreza.

Mike.

Very true, my IV never suffered (luckily), but my V did so I had the engine swapped for an VIII unit. The engine bays can rust badly too, and it's often not that noticeable unless you really get in there and poke around.
