Fitting advice - Downpipe + Uppipe
 

I have recently purchased an STi Sportcat downpipe and a decat uppipe and need to get them fitted to my 2005 WRX.

I dont mind giving most simple things a go but think these will be beyond my skills. My question is, will any mechanic be able to fit these or should I be looking to a subaru specialist?

Also, do I need to purchase a gasket and new bolts?

Always a good idea to fit new gaskets and bolts/nuts are a must, its very unlikely the old ones will come out without being chewed up and the tri-lock nuts are not reusable.

Most competent mechanics should be able to fit it for you without any issues. A Subaru specialist will obviously know more about the process.

I'm taking mine for a decat down pipe and was thinking about having a go at some of the bolts myself first so that I could save on possible labour charges. Plan was to see if i could loosen the bolts with a bit of gentle spanner and plus gas and then do them back up for the drive to the garage. Does this sound like a bad idea?? Was only going to have a go at the bolts I can see from the top.

Anyone got a link to bolts and gasket that I should buy for this?

is it just the nuts on the up pipe that will need replacing? or will the 1's on the back of the turbo for the down pipe be scrap as well once removed?

Import car parts are good for gaskets. Not sure if they stock bolts aswell though?

Did you have a go at swapping them yourself or are you going to take the car to a garage?

Downpipe is a job you can do yourself if you've got half-decent tools and axle-stands/ramps.
Up-pipe is more tricky. You will need to slacken engine mounts and jack engine up to get the up-pipe out. Depends how confident you are.

As above more tricky for the up pipe but no major hardship, down pipe easy to do providing you have some good tools, manifold pain in the arse an much easier when the engine is out of the car there a nightmare IMO!!!

Fitting Downpipe is easy if you have tools,but if you don't have tools its just pain in arse,about the Up pipe i never tried...

If he can do normal garage,not sure,where are you located?

Yes i would recommend gaskets and new bolts.Import Car parts selling full kit or scoobyworld and other companies,please use OE gaskets sets,these cheap eBay are worse like anything on market

Got a mate who used to work at a mazda rotary specialist garage but now runs his own garage, and has also built his R33 to 400bhp+ so I was going to ask him, as I do think its beyond my skills. Want to ideally fit them both, in fact, will probably be looking for a VF35 and fit that at the same time

If you will do all in one go including VF35,i would suggest/recommend run off the boost until remap or run just wastegate pressure until remap and deffo off the boost matey.

If its your friend know how to fit,i would say why not

Printed it out on A3 at work, and then went through it stage by stage. The guide covers more than just the uppipe, but it gives you a good idea of what you will face. To be honest I am only a novice-DIY mechanic and I managed the job in a few hours. Think your biggest issue will be seized nuts and bolts. Just blast them with loads and loads of penetrating fluid before you start the job and all should be okay ! Hope this helps pal ! :thumb:

Bear in mind that your car will need a map asap after fitting the new up/ downpipe.

Will be fitting everything next year and have a remap booked in straight away. I may even see if someone like JGM would fit the parts too and then map it, if he does that.
