Overheating problem

Hello lads and ladies,my first post on scoobynet and its a cry for help.I have a 99 sti type r and thermostat will not open.Fitted newage v7/8 block 2 weeks ago as big ends were shot in old block. On power fc getting temps of 93/94,doing the learn function on power fc 2 months ago with old engine got temps of 98/99.Temp gauge in car has never ever gone passed halfway.Fitted new rad last week and even put back on oe water pump yesterday. How do i know its stat, well tried them all with boiling water and they open,so i removed the center of 1 and fitted it and hey presto bottom hose warms, fan on at 92 and goes off 30 secs later. Before it came on and stayed on.Heater in car always works fine and pretty sure there is no air lock.So the 10 million dollar question is what would cause a new working stat not to work on the car even when the oil cooler and heater pipes at the pump are roasting?
(will post a few pics and intro in general in a few mins)

hi
block test your car and it can take a few mins in boling water for them to open plus i have see them fitted wrong causing them not to open proberly

Cheers will do that. What temp on the power fc would the gauge in
the car climb into the red as it only goes to halfway/normal?
Have seen it go to 98/99 and gauge is fine.I only travel less than 5kms a day so car never really gets up to operating temp, also only started watching temp on fc for last 2 weeks after fitting engine.

Ok, got car tested today and no exhaust gasses in coolant. Is there any other reason the stat will not open?
I know stat is rated at 78degs but roughly at what temp on pfc should it open as i have seen it in high 90s and bottom hose cold.Cheers

stat or air lock ?

sean typer 21 November 2011 04:21 PM

Defo not stat, have about 3 of them and they all work(kettle of boiling water)
Have filled and bled a few times. In car heater always hot,new stat, new rad and 2 waterpumps.I would image the stat should be well open by 92deg when the fans come on.

sonicvr6 21 November 2011 04:35 PM

mine took about 1 hour to burp when i did the pimp the other day ho much coolant did it take ?

Dont know to be honest.I take off the little pipe between rad and header tank and fill until water comes out the top of rad, refit pipe, start car keep topping up and squeezing top and bottom hoses and heater on hot with high fan in car.Takes about half hour.Watching pfc 92deg fans come on and stay on.fit cap on header tank temp climbs fans on 94,95,96 etc bottom hose still cold???
As i said in a previous post i fitted a stat with the middle taken out and everything was fine, bottom hose warm fan on at 92 and switched off 30seconds later temp down to 87.
Cannot understand why a working stat will not open in car but will in a sink of boiling water.

got to be airlock are you putting it in the right way round ?

sean typer 21 November 2011 06:10 PM

Thermostat is in right.Read somewhere maybe here about filling with a funnel in the turbo coolant hose.Only thing i never changed was the rad cap but it seems alright, dont know if it would matter though.

sonicvr6 21 November 2011 06:14 PM

right when i did mine and it worked took a few atempts mine i filled the rad the matrix pipes then the bottle then burped it

Think i got it sorted today:luxhello:
Only difference was i parked on a good incline so the front of the car was a foot or 2 higher than the back, let it tickover with cap off and it left water out a few times and leveled off. That must have been the trapped air.Cap on, bottom hose gets warm, fan on at 92 for 30sec then off, temp at 87:notworthy happy days
will keep an eye on coolant for the next week.
Cheers:thumb:
