alloy wheel refurb ripoff
hi
i have a set of 18" inovite redine alloy wheels on my scoob they are a little bit lightly scratched but not to bad. i phoned up several alloy wheel refurb companys in aberdeen and i was getting quotes at £312 inc vat for all four. heres the thing that pisses me off. to buy the wheels off of ebay the price is £300 for the four alloy wheels without tyres and brand spanking new. so why would someone pay £312 to get there alloy wheels refurbed when its cheaper to buy brand new. some of these companys need to WINDE THERE NECKS IN.:nono: tell us what you think guys. does anyone know someone who can refurb alloys in the aberdeenshire area that is reasnobley priced. also has anyone painted there wheels themselfs and if you did how did you do it and what paints did you use also is it lasting okay. cheers guys :thumb: |
hey, i painted my wheels. still look the same now maybe 5 months later.
just used spray cans, but i spent a long time on the preparation side - didnt clear coat them though as i wanted the matt finish like the original wheels. heres the thread i posted when i did them:

Did mine myself to.
Pretty easy job and quite satisfying. Just take time in the prep as this is the most important part for a good finish. |

did you take some fine grit sand paper to them before you sprayed them and what type of primer did you use. settled i am gonna spray them my self. lol |
The first quote I got was £95 a wheel so I guess that beats your £312.

Sorry this has to be my first post but if a guy comes in the bodyshop i work at in a hawk eye scooby and gets quoted 2k for a full respray should i quote a guy who comes in a classic 500 because his car is is worth 2k max :nono:
If ur wheels are worth 300 or a grand paint and labor prices dont change thats just ridiculas on a lighter not get some elbow grease on em wheel refurbs are easy to do diy |
Try not to compare it to the price of the Redlines, if you had wheels that were 2k new the refurb price would still be the same as the same work goes into in regardless.
I've always thought £60 a corner would be fair but 4 together and you are not far off your quote, give it a try yourself. |

Local guy to me: £80 a wheel for heavy marking, £50 a wheel light scuffing.

hi i am relitivly new here aswell mate.
to be honest to spray a car is a lot of work really. so i probibly would still charge the 2k if the amount of work is the same as the hawk eye. but here is something i have been looking at i found some guys that do full resprays for around £600 - £800 because i was thinking of spraying my civic type r white but then i sold it and bought a scoob. but up here in aberdeen some garages charge 3k - 4k for a respray.

Im trying to say mate just because u got cheap rims a refurb is a refurb regardles of if ther 300 or a grands worth n the scoob is just a example wouldnt touch a car for 2k and paint i use wouldnt be coverd by 600

yea you guys are right i am going to spray them myself.
i think around £50 per wheel is fair to do a powdercoat i still think £312 for all four is a rip off. around 10 years ago i used to do shotblasting and powdercoating at a company called ljf powdercoating in aberdeen doing everything from alloy wheels to farm equipment. so i know exactly what is involved in the whole proccess and what i know is £312 is a rip off |
just because you have cheapo alloys doesnt mean the price for powdercoating is going to be affected. theres a fair amount of work involved including:
remving tyres chemical strip acid primer etching powdercoating baking possibly waxing fitting and balancing tyres thats just powdercoating, not even including refurbing which takes alot of time. £300 for a set of 18's with a refurb needed to all alloys is pretty reasonable tbh. Yes you can pay less at other places or do them yourself with rattle cans but its the quality in the powder finish that makes them durable and they wont flake/chip away. Also, yes im sure you can get your car resprayed for £600, but i can assure you it will look **** afterwards and probably have laquer peel, orange peel, dust under paint, not properly prepped etc.... basically you get what you pay for... |

I did mine DIY but took a slightly different route.
Had all the wheels sand blasted for £25.00 then got a local cheapo body shop to paint them for £50.00 and also sold 2 of the old tyres for £40.00 So had 5 shiney new alloys for £35.00 :D I don't do space savers :nono: |
no need to pay over £300 for a powdercoat when everyone else pays between £150-£200.
Maggy did mine , they came back spot on and they didn't cost £300. |
i am not saying the £600 respray is going to look like a picasso
i am just saying there is difference in price from the £600 upto the £ 3000 to £4000 pounds the garages charge up in my area. if you read what i wrote in the top post you would read that my wheels are not scuffed or marked just lightly scratched so all i was interested was a powdercoat and as all that work you mentioned i used to do it myself years ago and i know exactly whats involved so you really dont need to tell me. i am not a guy that wants something for nothing i am a guy who just likes a fair deal.

cant remember what primer i used.
i think i used about four cans of primer, and four cans of colour. the most important thing is to take time when your sanding them so that everything is super-smooth |
Hi ironbridge. Sorry to highjack ( just a little bit) but I to am also thinking of doing my wheels. Ironbridge, you have the same wheels as I do so going to borrow one of you pics and see if I can get them photo shopped onto my blob.

i have a set of 4 18" redlines mate
i also have a set of 4 17" alloys aswell dont know what kind. so i am going to enquire about the powder coat on the 18" from the company mentioned above but after looking at the job you done on your wheels mate i am going to probably going to give it a try to spray them myself and if it doesnt turn out so well i can send them to the powdercoaters mentioned above.
