Did anyone tell Sid??

Glad I did :D

British Gas shares have increased 12 times in value in the 25 years since privatisation

It was 25-years ago that Margaret Thatcher's government privatised British Gas urging investors to snap up shares with the advertising slogan 'if you see Sid tell him'.

Around 1.5million 'Sids' took up her offer at a original price of 135p per share with a minimum purchase of 100 shares.

And as it turns out, they made a rather good investment.

Although many sold up for a quick profit in the first week, those who invested £135 in 1986 would now be looking at shares worth £1,721, a welcome profit for anybody struggling to pay their fuel bills this winter.

I believe my old dear still holds my Dads old BT and BG shares. She's been receiving dividend cheques too, over the years.

Just shows how much better the private sector is at running things than the public sector - what a great advert for privatisation! :)

The 12 times is not really a true refelction of the investment though as British Gas was split into 3, inc Centrica,BG and National Grid. If the divi re-investment of all 3 was included it would make the % profit far higher than 1200%
