Calling Syms Racing manifold owners
We've just installed a Syms manifold on my V5 STi Type R along with some other modifications, just curious in what aspects Syms helped you - other than the insane sound :notworthy
The old setup: OEM VF34 OEM yellow 440ccm injectors OEM TMIC Custom made headers APS turbo back Motec M48 Blitz cold air intake The car made 350hp/450Nm around 1.5 bar, spool came right at 3700rpm. The new setup: Turbo Dynamics Hybrid VF34 STi pink 550ccm injectors Process West TMIC Syms equal length headers Custom turbo back Motec M48 Blitz cold air intake The car makes 360hp/480Nm @ 1.55 bar, spool comes at 4400rpm… The first positive step is the sound, just amazing. Sounds almost like a WRC, just love it :luvlove: Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew9Yqz9nWt4 Now comes the bad news…car spools at 4400rpm – definately not happy about that :( I'm aware that the larger TMIC does not help spool, but Syms adds only more lag to this (we've gained 20hp at above 6000rpm, but thats due to the TMIC) We've replaced the Syms with unequal length Tomei manifolds, the car spooled at 4100 and way better above 6000 too. We've measured the backpressure of the Syms and the Tomei, guess what: the Syms' backpressure is almost 15% less compared to the Tomei :Suspiciou Is this normal or we have a constant leak we can't hear or see? The car feels sluggish below 4000 and pressure builds up reeeaal slow. Everything is fine above 4500-8000rpm, but I've expected more of Syms. Right now I have to say, that Syms is laggy compared to a cheaper Tomei manifold, which is superior in all aspects except for sound. Any thoughts? |
I would say these headers doesn't help spool, which up pipe you are using, probably worth to swap to OE headers with OE up pipe and try for comparison.

maybe the pipe diameter is to big on exhaust manifold for the turbo you have? Maybe it's thats why the turbospool is slow. Compare the ones you got.
|
Syms racing equal lenght headers have small diameter pipework and a built in up pipe....
Mine sound and perform awsome but this was compared to subaru original equipment....went from 360 to just over 400 with Syms headers... |
I have the Syms equal length headers and its bespoke twin venturi uppipe. Mine seem to perform okay in conjunction with my 20g. And being unequal, most of the flat-4 burble has gone. But it's replaced by more of a, as you say, WRC-type wail.
Is that the noise of your Syms mani. in that vid ^^^?! It sound like there's a massive leak somewhere, what with it making that rough stucatto type noise! Did nobody there pick up on that?!  |
Roofer what setup/mods you're running mate?
I want to figure out if its the header that makes the lag or maybe another component I'm not thinking of currently… The current turbo back pipe is slightly smaller in diameter than the previous, so the spool should be better. Its not :( |
Joz, I'm running completely catless, its just a tube with a center resonator. That's why you're hearing the rough noise (I guess). We've checked for leaks, but didn't find anything. Maybe we missed something?
|
Hmmmn. Even so it sounds a bit 'rough' (to me at least).
But of course that could well be the just timbre charactersitics of your decat/system combo.... |

Its not :( Old dinosaur GT30 standard position 740cc injectors full 3" system Custom intake Autronics After fitting the Syms manifolds the most noticable difference (apart from sound)was in mid range and didnt seem to run out of puff at top end... Mine sounded similar to your in clip with the Titanium exhaust i had before but was too loud for track so swapped to Revolution exhaust.... Dont have any of it stationary but you can here it barking here >>. Lol... Go to 7.35 http://youtu.be/MJwjzP60f2Q?t=7m36s |

How about spool rpm, any changes in that? Cheers, Chris. |
There are a number of causes of poor spool. For instance today we have a car with the wastegate penny valve partially open. Any gas leak from the cylinder head to the turbo will also cause poor spool.
After that I would look at the design of the headers and uppipe. Next on the list is the mapping of your car as the map can have a big effect on spool. Your Avatar does not say where you are located but if you were within striking distance of Darlington we would be prepared to look at an overall package to resolve your issues after we had inspected your vehicle. |
Hey Harvey, thanks for the offer mate I'm in Hungary so the inspection is not going to work ;) We've already checked all parts and everything seems to be in perfect shape, I guess its just the design of the header. In exchange I love the sound it makes :notworthy
However, we've installed an Injen cold air intake and it looks like this helped a lot. Previously I had a Blitz intake installed (the one with the metal mesh structure). I don't have a Dyno sheet after the Injen installation, but here's one with the Blitz. The main difference is that based on the MoTeC logs I have the desired boost @ 4130rpm right now (instead of 4300rpm as you can see on the graph) http://kepfeltoltes.hu/thumb/111117/...toltes.hu_.jpg |
Visionhu: I have a thumbnail here so even at 150% enlargement it means very little.
Where about in Hungary? I know some part of Hungary very well, Lake Balaton, Budapest, Abony where I was based for a while and Zolnok |
Syms equal length here, no issues with spool and I concur with Rooferman regarding seat of the pant dyno performance...will did up a vid for sound when I get in :)
|
Just a thought check your turbo inlet pipe, mine started being really laggy and after a lot of head scratching found that the rubber part of the inlet pipe had been chewed by the hose clip around it over time. I replaced it with a samco (ouch) and problem solved :-)
|
Sorry for the age old bump, but did you manage to resolve the problem or atleast pinpoint the issue (im having similar spool issues.)
