Looking to go turbo
I currently own a scooby impreza AWD non turbo, but i am looking to go turbo within the next year, will i notice a huge difference in fuel consumption from a standard 2.0 to turbo?
cheers Ben |
My first car was an Impreza Sport. About 30 to the gallon. Had 3 turbo variants and get about 22-25 average.
|
thats not to bad really, so probs looking at spending just over £10 more a week at a guess
|
My Mrs's Sport is terrible on fuel. I got 280 miles from a tank when I borrowed it doing the same journeys I did everyday in my then MY95 WRX, which did 240 miles to the tank (although I used Optimax in this, not 95 RON like the Sport). My current V5 STI RA Ltd with 2.1 stroker does 220 miles per tank for the same journeys (my Astra 1.6 SXI run-around does 400 miles for £58 fill-up!).
|
how much does it take to fill up your turbo if you dont mine me asking? just weighing it up against how much you can get out of your 1.6 astra, My sport is roughly £40 fill up so with the additional £18 ontop of that odviously it wont be 400 miles but thats what you get when owning a scoob but it will be a fair amount ya know, or am i wrong?
cheers Ben |
The Sport takes approx £58 to fill up (95 RON) - 280 miles approx. (I bloody have to fill her car up!!).
The 1.6 Astra SXI takes approx £58 to fill up (95 RON) - approx 400 miles The STI RA Ltd - takes approx £65 to fill up (Optimax) - approx 220 miles. |
hmmm i was very wrong then, haha i get killed cause my gf refuses to get the bus and i have to take her in costs me a fortune over a week, I only work 3 miles away she works 35 miles away agggghhhhhh
Cheers for the help mate Ben |
does it also depend on driving style how much it will use as well odviously if you floor it, it will drink alot more, etc etc

LOL time to ask the missus to supplement ur fuel costs and running of the car :thumb: If your worried about fuel consumption a impreza really aint the car for you, and yes driving style depends on MPG, it does with any car. If driven sensible you can get some increased millage per a tank, just dont drive round like a loon on boost 24/7, i would expect to see around low 20's on a good run in mine. And single figures on the track :lol1: |
haha, yeah i think she should, cant wait until she passes then she will understand how expensive it can be, thanks for the help guys, i am still looking to go turbo, i love my scoob i couldnt imagine owning another car now, only a better one haha

I don't drive like a t1t but when the roads are clear and the conditions dictate, then some spirited driving might well entail :norty:
Quickly worked out - 22mpg in the RA. |
TBH, mate, much as you might want it, an Impreza turbo isn't a good car for a 70 mile a day round trip.
In a month, you've covered around 1550 miles, and at 25 mpg, (which is decent going), that's 62 gallons. Optimax seems to go for around £1.45 a LITRE, so that's £408 in fuel. Is it worth her working, if the journey to and from work is costing you over £400 a month? To put it another way, the same journey for a month in a decent diesel would cost UNDER £200 :( |
your right I know, i mean i spend around £50 a week on petrol, thats if i am real lucky, sometimes she does get the bus, so i mean, if say she were too every day as were due to move closer to her work soon then it shouldnt be a prob, and she will be driving soon, and i will be doing about 10 miles each day max, which shouldnt be too harsh, wouldnt you say?
thanks for the advice mate Ben |
Yeah, so long as she's got a car that uses little fuel;)
|
yeah she will only be getting a little 1.0L might steal hers for work haha
|
people say i wouldnt bother (turbo) and yes it is alot on fuel but if ur making the decision to get a turbo then ur willing to pay the fuel..i have had turbo and sport over the years and again if u drive decent speed there really aint to much difference...i have a sport special and love it ...yes there is more to the turbo but more costs i think
|
A friend had a sport and said how bad it was on fuel, so a step to a turbo shouldnt be to bad lol
|
^^^ I was quite taken back at how bad my Mrs. Sport is on fuel. But she likes the car and it gave me somewhere to stick my gold ST2's!
Make the jump to the turbo - you won't regret the decision performance wise. Sports are very under-powered for what they are. I think the AWD saps the life out of the N/A engine. |
Thanks for the advice guys, appologies about the late response i been all work and no play, i didnt think my AWD was that bad on fuel, but if the turbo is very little different then its defo worth it for that little extra kick, How do you mean its saps the life out of the N/A engine?
cheers Ben |
You all must drive like loons!
I get 35mpg easy out of my sport. Day to day driving I'd never get below 28mpg. Of course, I have had 19mpg going for a hoon :norty: |
he means it saps the power driving all 4 wheels as opposed to just 2 . there are power losses through transmission etc as well. you really need the turbo to get the impreza flying.
|
I been meaning to go turbo for a while now but was debating waiting it out until i am 25, but i am 24 now and i have full no claims paying £708 which is pretty good, sorry i should say it will be a full no claims in january, okay i worked it out, I usually use about £5 per day going from where i live to maidstone and back which isnt terrible really, and if i have read this correctly as long as i drive sensibly going turbo shouldnt make much difference at all

Sports only have a 50ltr fuel tank, alot of people forget that ;)
Tony:) |
So in the grand scheme of things is it worth me going turbo, am i gonna be skint, I know lots of people who seem to cope fine with them, but i am quite a think far too much before i do sorta person
cheers Ben |
i've had a sport and well i wouldnt have on again as the turbo is so much more rewarding and tony is the sport tank lighter and if so will if fit on my turbo ?
|
your 24 and paying £708 on a scoob, or is that just the sport, its gona go up when you mention turbo.
|
£65 worth of v-power gets me 240 miles week in week out.
|
It's just a sport, I expect to pay more tbh, but my insurer is really good for rewarding loyal customers, they have always done me proud so I reacon the insurance won't be too bad
