symptoms of a knackered rear diff

hi,what the most common noises for a worn/knackered diff?,i have a r180 dccd sti type r v4 1998.

it does not clunk or bang or anything but i have whirring coming from the rear end of car and am assuming wheel bearing/s.

can a worn diff create whirring?:wonder:

Thats a case of either or mate, it's worth inspecting the condition of the oil in your diff, that can identify if there's a serious fault there

I had the same problem plus binding from the diff when parking on full lock turned out it was the wrong oil in the diff so bought some old school lsd oil and all fixed now. Just a thought was the noise there before oil change

yes its been there since i purchased the car,it had a loud exhaust when i bought it so didnt hear anything,it did have a mot failure of rear nearside wheel bearing excessive play, back before i owned the car, when i looked at the reciept it said "check and retighten wheel bearing, labour £10"
its recently passed another mot with no advisorys.
im assuming its been overtightened and this is what the whirring is.
